This is public land (something you don't see that much anymore). It was owned by someone else previously and they chose to release it and now whoever finds it first and wants it can buy it at the L$1/m rate. You did nothing wrong by buying it.

Is there a way to search around for this public land? I'm guessing it doesn't appear so much on the land sales list ...

look at your map...white plots of land are for sale by the owner....grey colored plots are public land and available at $1L a meter.

errr... isn't released land sent to auction instead of made public? or has that changed again and I missed it?

I think we all need to REALLY QUESTION THIS.
What's operative here isn't that a 512 plot was set to sale for $1/L. That's admirable, that's what we wish all released land given back to the public open market would be set out for, instead of being jacked up at auction.
But look closely at what Heather wrote. She said the 512 was subdivided into 16 sq meter plots within the 512. Now what on EARTH is up with THAT??? What moron subdivides a 512 like that? (If you meant to say something else, Heather, please explain.)
What, Linden Labs like to create an open wound in a landscape, where 16 griefers can buy up those 16 plots and play troll on them, charging fantastic sums, especially for newbies trying to hold it together around them?
I find this appalling. They have no good reason to do this. They wouldn't get the extortion income from this subdivide, the extortionist would.
Could they please review this and see if their own devices have bugs or they have made a mistake? I can't believe this was done manually. And if it is, thanks a lot, you've proved that if you aren't pernicious, you're stupid.

Prokofy, I imagine the Lindens did NOT do the dividing.
It is known that only plots of certain size or larger go to auction.
The person who released this land obviously did not want this plot to go to auction, so they split it up, and then released it. The system sees a bunch of 16m plots, none big enough to go to auction, so they are made public at L$1/m.
Not a bug, no Linden trickery at work, no conspiracy. Just someone wanting to release land and make sure it went public.

public land has always reverted to standard 16sm blocks. it's not a bug or a conspiracy.
when you want to buy multiple public blocks:
open the edit window (ctrl-3); click on the bulldozer; select multiple blocks; and press the buy button.
this only works for personal land, you cannot buy land for a group using this method. i'm sure there's a very good reason for that. one other point, a selection cannot include any blocks that you're not buying so you often still have to purchase odd pieces then join them.

You could probably join them up and they buy it for the group.

From: someone public land has always reverted to standard 16sm blocks. it's not a bug or a conspiracy. OK great, glad to hear it, I stand corrected. are you saying it would be impossible for an individual to buy just one of these 16 sq m though? The potential for griefing remains high.

are you saying it would be impossible for an individual to buy just one of these 16 sq m though? The potential for griefing remains high. not at all. you can buy each individual square if you like. this is a holdover from when we used to purchase and release 16sm at a time as we could afford, or not afford, the taxes. when 1.2 came out, 512sm became the "basic unit" of land to most people, but the lindens didn't update the tech to only support that small a parcel. that was an oversight. now they're talking about a sim being the "basic unit" of land without any intermediary measurement and without ever forcing us to recognize larger "units" by actually making them the smallest "units" available. sometimes i just wonder. and yes blaze you can always deed land to a group later. you can also purchase each little square, one at a time, directly for the group if you have the patience. you cannot join land you don't own. we've never been able to do that.

Hmmm so Lindens wont take my land back then I actually started buying each one at a time before i realised i could highlight them all an buy at once. Another strange thing is that theres another two 16 sq.m quite close by which are for sale for stupid prices. Thanks for the info though everybody You forum junkies are not really bad are u

I think land-scanners got a bad name because they eat up scripting stuff and lag sims? Although this is heatedly debated. And I think they can even scarf up somebody's land right when there in the act of selling it and mistakenly first clicking "sell" and only later thinking to change the "0" box? I dunno. I have a pair of land scanners called my two eyes which I use for 10 minutes a day to look on the Find list.

From: Charlotte Gillespie Why not? Is there something wrong with looking out for a bargain? It's a performance issue. Land scanners tended to drag down the system's performance, especially back when there were several land speculators each with their own scanning systems. At least, that was the perception, I don't know if the actual performance numbers back that up.

You know, that's never worked for me. It still just buys the last block I selected. Oh, and ctrl-5 saves you from the 'click on the bulldozer' step!

Land scanners do not degrade sim performance in any way, unless they're coded to run dozens of times per second.

Click about land (in the edit window, after doing your method), then buy for group works like a charm
