http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4104731.stmFrom: BBC News A 22-year-old gamer has spent $26,500 (£13,700) on an island that exists only in a computer role-playing game (RPG).
The Australian gamer, known only by his gaming moniker Deathifier, bought the island in an online auction.
The land exists within the game Project Entropia, an RPG which allows thousands of players to interact with each other.

If we had $26,500 to play around with, maybe it would not be so ridiculous. It is all relative. I am sure Bill Gates lights up his cigars with $26,500 dollar bills. Now that I look back and add up what I have spent on this game, I think it is pretty ridiculous too. I could probably have gone to Australia and visited Deathifier, or fed numerous hungry children, or bought my wife a nice diamond ring, or bought a new computer. See, now you made me think. - T -

I dug a bit deeper, and it seems that the island was sold with "investment opportunities" in mind. Meaning, if he played his cards right, he might end up with a several thousand dollar profit, or more.
So maybe it's not so dumb after all.

Also I believe the virtual land area is a number of square miles, so if you compare it to SL pricing, it's cheap.

And no recurring monthly charges, unlike SL -- which increases the cost of ownership, but you don't think of it at auction time

I'm new here, just signed up last nght from what I read yes it looks like Linded is the main body to make money out of entrepeneurs buying and renting land... Because here you don't really buy, here you rent... so you rent and subrent really... But if you rent and sub rent... I do not think you should pay so much to occupy the land in the first place... Buying the right to rent a land.. then having to pay monthly sound a bit like too much... especially when you read elsewhere of people having problems with neighbors planting down lag-centered malls etc...

Think of it in terms of webspace. If you buy a colo server somewhere, you have to pay a setup cost, and then a monthly fee to cover bandwidth and power and whatnot. Extend this into SL. With SL, you're getting a slice of a top-end simulator of physics and number crunching for a few bucks of month, plus a "startup fee". Not too bad of a deal. LF

Project Entropia's rather different from SL (please note my penchant for stating the obvious.. =p) The only way to make 'money' there is to own land, and charge other people a percentage of their mining finds, or rent on the land.... that sort of thing. Without a big investment, the place is a PITA. Too time consuming, which burns ALL one's socialization time, very 'dog-eat-dog'.. *shrug* ...which would be why I landed here, instead.

Maybe LL needs to take some notes from Project Entropia. Center SL around making money...

Yet that's another factor LL would have to intro.. Consumption based around essentials such as "things" you need to run a business. I can't really through out details, because it all depends... But a good example is how in the Real World you need Oil for plastics, Steel and Wood for Buildings, etc... SL would need basic materials which in turn lead to consumption by all, regardless of what business is being run. And some businesses can feed off others to create different businesses.

Agreed. But SL isnt quite at that point yet. Demand for smaller items will spur the design of larger and more resource intensive items, like factories in RL. Those things will come, but it is something the world needs to grow into at the moment. Ultimately the idea is to make more efficient production of retail consumer goods. Small purchases by many people fund large scale ventures -AP
