High-resolution world map

I've put together a high-resolution map of SecondLife, excluding the private islands and the new continent -- a 3550 x 2900 image. It's at http://home1.gte.net/cpq2ts42/SecondLifeLarge.jpg -- note that even this low-quality version is half a megabyte. A high-quality PNG of this map is available for L$250 -- it's a 10MB image, so I don't want to send it out to anybody who isn't really interested in it.

Impressive. But how do I get hold of the high-quality version if you're only on at stupid o'clock in the morning?!

Nice! Like satellite imagery. I can even see my house.

I might be interested in having this as a wallpaper. Can you give a sample of an individual sim at the highest resolution? Would be nice to see how much clearer it is than the big map, which is pretty low-rez.

Now the JPG won't load for me - has someone gone over their bandwidth limit?

If you've got a Gmail account or other email account that can handle 10MB attachments, you can IM me with the contact details. I've got IM->email set up, so I should get any message you send.

I've attached a high-quality version of a few sims.

I've sent out maps to April Firefly and Till Stirling. Did they arrive properly?

Now this is awesome. Do you know how long I scoured the dark recesses of the internet to find something like this? I resorted to taking pics myself, but I never would have got around to something like this. When was this taken, and how long did it take to produce? Lining up the seams would be a chore, I'd imagine. Are you planning updates? I personally would view that as too much of a hassle, but then you had the patience to put this masterpiece together so what do I know? Good job.

An idea came to me just before I submitted this post. I decided I'd update where I live (Orwood) myself, when it occured to me that this could become a community project with people updating parts themselves and submitting it. Am I off-track, or could this work?

It took about fifteen minutes to take the screenshots of the map, and another 45 minutes to piece everything together. The first vertical and horizontal rows were the hardest; after that, alignment was easy.

I don't know if I'll be able to update, as the method I'm using requires running SecondLife under Linux, and 1.6 doesn't seem to be compatible with my version of Linux.

Cool image, Carniildo. It would be slick to automate it with a program that stitched together images of the individual sims, based on file name, into the single large map.

try asking the Ls

Perhaps you should ask the Lindens to give you a few hints on how the Map does it. I bet they could give you a few pointers in scripting something so that you might be able to sell a high-quality product that shows off how good SL looks.
