Unless I dreamt it, there used to be a public display of the top 10 or 20 residents' land holdings, and another with the top 10 or 20 residents' cash balance.
Comparing those may provide useful information as to whether certain leading citizens are liquidating or accumulating either Lindens or acreage (which may be why I can no longer find it).
It may be simply hiding in plain sight. Can someone point either data source out to me?

Used to be here: http://secondlife.com/community/leaderboard.phpLooks like they have finally deprecated it completely. This frog has been boiled. Similarly, http://secondlife.com/community/economy.phpis now gone.

It has been discontinued because of "popular demand"; which I think was a dis-service to the community of Second Life. The old leaderboard was easily gamed. But at least you could get a rough estimate about the major players holdings and the oligopolies starting to form.

I can tell you one good reason why such information is a bad idea to be made public.
In Sims Online, I ran one of the most successful "welcome" houses for new players in my particular city for over 2 years. Having invested so much time in the game, I had managed to obtain the largest size plot of land possible, had a nice big house built on it, and a fair smattering of 'luxury' items, as well as around a million simoleans in the bank. Not a huge figure, but comfortable enough to live on without having to worry about making it too much any more.
Time after time new players would land on my property, and basically say that because I must be loaded with cash and expensive things, I should give them some. I would probably get at least one begger a day and it would get rather tiresome. Giving out stuff to newbies is not the way to help them - advice and information, which I specialised in, is - and I never had one complaint about that, just the fact that I wouldn't give them "stuff".
Would you like it if you had your bank statement pasted in your front window for all your neighbours to see how much money you had? No... didn't think so. So why should it be different in a game?
Just for the record, I own 2500 sq m and have less than L$4,000 in the bank. Not much by any standards.

Having grown up in a country/society where it was not uncommon even for the own family not to know what "fathers brings home" every month, I am used to this attitude. But that does not change my opinion that it is good for a society to know who the "big players" are. No, I don't envy anyone the riches earned in (Second) Life.

I don't honestly care who has the most money or land holdings; nothing anyone else has can affect my style of gameplay.
I can just see it as a further tool for the griefer to use.... such as ugly builds and signs being targetted at the richest players as they are more likely to "throw away" L$20,000 to regain their view, or whatever.

Lewis I'd agree with this; I don't think it's anyone else's business. It hurts the more straightforward player, too - if you are devious about it, you can hide your money and land among various alts. Anonymous stats would be fun though. We could all talk and pretend we understood them...
