The first rule of SL business is to not go into something because that's where the money is.

Rather, go into something you could have fun doing. If that happens to be music, more power to you.

"Where the money is" changes about once a month around here.

Just go into business to have fun. SL is meant for relaxation. If it pays the bills while doing so, it's a mild bonus.

I'm not sure what you mean by "selling music", but I'm fairly sure that the best -- and most time-tested way of making money -- is to make clothes/scripts/build stuff.

Give it a try, though! Don't let it stop you -- you may unwittingly create a new industry in SL :)

The big money items are pretty competitive, so it might be wise to avoid them unless you feel you have developed (or wish to develop) the necessary expertise to compete properly.

Also, SLers are generally bleeding edge types so feel free to attempt something innovative. You'll find a lot more early adopters around here than you would in real life.

I'd say it's a crap shoot if you're starting from low Ls.

I've made 700$ in 2 weeks from 20 hours of scanning and cleaning up a ton of celtic knotwork textures I wanted to use. Hardly a worthwhile rate of return on the initial investment.

Now if you have real $ to invest you can shoot to the top pretty fast by buying large chunks of land and reselling, or starting a casino, etc.

As they say it takes money to make money.
