I've seen floating platforms for sale that you can put property on. Does that mean you don't have to buy land to own a house somewhere? What are the pro/cons.? Why dont' we all live in the sky?

You need the land below, to place a sky build over it legitimately

Welcome my fellow Snoats. It's really user choice on whether they want to build something on the land or in the sky over their property. Some people do it because it's cool, while others do it for privacy and unobstructed views. There's really no pros or cons to doing it either way. Also for some people, it's easier to build up in the sky because you don't have odd shaped land to get in your way.

From: Sinbad Snoats Why dont' we all live in the sky? Personal preference. Some people just really want the realism of living where they can see their neighbors and the land. Once I built my first sky house I was hooked and wouldn't ever live on the ground again. The view is fabulous (for one) and it is nice working and hanging out in a spot that is largely undisturbed. Unlike on the ground where anyone flying by might steer in your direction to see who that green dot is, people really have to go looking for you at 400m. Which is not say that you have complete privacy because there is always someone who is equipped properly and adventurous enough to go looking for green dots they can't find on the ground, maybe once every couple of weeks I will have an uninvited visitor, which really doesn't bother me unless they are armed and looking for someone to shoot at. The secondary reason I stay in the sky is because my land is all open to the public between the stores and the Botanical Gardens and I get lots of vistors. Especially in the Gardens, I like to let people enjoy them without me hanging around and them feeling watched.

Thanks all. So what about restrictions. Will I have to own land below my skyhome to stream music to it or can you stream music to a building that isn't on land?

Yes, you need to either own or rent the land below (I'm assuming landlords allow their rentals to set streaming media....) The highest you can build at is 768m and the cloud layer sits between 200 to 260m, so you want to avoid that area as well.

I havent built on platform, only onground land. i guess its personal prefrence. platform is good for more privacy. it doesnt matter that much to me but i lean towards platform builds for privacy.

some ppl build them if they have hilly/mountain land and they want something flat. Normally hillside/mountain land is cheaper so ppl just throw a platform down and save money

If I plan to build in the sky, I place the build on the ground, then edit it, and add the height distance in numbers.
If the house/platform is at level 45.673 and I want it to be at 100m above the ground, I change it to 145.673 and poof, it is up there.
The reason I do it that way is to assure my build is within the boundary lines on the ground, so my stuff doesn't end up being auto-returned.

Another technique is to rez basic cubes in each 4 corners of your land, then raise them all to the height you are going to build at. This gives you corner boundaries of your property. This is helpful for when you are doing constant remodeling and don't want to drop your build down I also sometimes use the music stream to figure out where my property lines are.
