Hi All.

I've got a noob question. The SL site talks of cheap land through the "First Land" feature. My question is, Can I buy first land on a Basic Account?

Cheers,

No, you have to have at least the cheapest premium account.

The SL Land FAQ is here.

And welcome to SL!

No, you cannot. You must upgrade to a premium membership in order to own land. If you have a monthly, quarterly or yearly account, you are at the lowest "tier" level for land, which means that you may own up to 512 m2 of land. In order to own larger amounts of land than that, you must pay higher and higher tier fees; fortunately the tier becomes cheaper and cheaper on a -per meter basis, the more land that you own. If you look under "your account" you will get a better idea about how much land each tier level will allow. If you have more questions about land buying, IM me in world; it's much better to learn a bit about how land "works" in SL before jumping in feet-first. Good luck

This is why it's worth renting land on just a basic account to enable yourself to shop around, and also try SL for awhile before you commit to Premium level and get the 512 free, or higher level at increasingly levels of tier.

But you don't need to own land to enjoy SL, you can build in the sandbox, hang out at everybody else's builds if they are open, go to clubs and events, etc.

Thanks for the replies. It's good to see an online community without the masses of abusive teenagers intent on ruining everyone elses experience. SL would have to be the friendliest online chat / community I've ever experienced.

Ok, If I sign up for a premium account later on and I get the First Land cheap, Do I have to pay a monthly fee for that land, or do I just pay the L$1 per m2 that the faq states only once?

welcome Jordan. just keep out of General and Off Topic and you'll probably keep that happy feeling about the forums. :D

premium accounts have a $9.95 monthly fee but there's not extra fee for land if you don't go over 512 square meters. i'm pretty sure all the First Land plots are only 512 meters. land in the First Land program costs L$1 per square meter to buy but i think it's only available to fairly new accounts so if you've been around a while and then you get a premium account you might not be eligible anymore.

long story short, if you get a premium account and are still able to get First Land all you will have to pay is the usual $9.95 a month for the premium account and L$1 per square meter once only to buy the First Land plot.

sorry to confuse things but ......

When I joined SL a year ago, I bought and held 4K of land on a 'Basic' account, sure I had to foot the bill for all of the tier each month, but I'm pretty sure that this still applies (I only upgraded to premium a few months ago) :D The annual upfront premium account is well worth the money.

EDIT :

To be eligable for First land, I think you need to hold one of the premium accounts.

From what i have read on here that was an error on lindens part but they decided everyone that had signed up could keep it like that.

Pick up this handy little doodad in order to help you stay clear on what tier will cost and what resources (prim numbers) it will allow you. If you have a premium account you are paying a monthly subscription fee of $9.99 or you can get it more cheaply if you get a longer sub. For example yearly @ $72.00. This provides you with "Tier" for 512 m2 of land each month. If you wish to own more land, you may, but will pay a higher monthly amount. For example, going up to the very next tier and being able to own 1024 m2 of land will cost you an additional $5 (If I remember correctly) per month.

Hope this helps, and welcome to the community

All First land is 512m2 for L$512.

You are eligible for First Land as long as you have never owned any land before, anywhere, any time. Length of time playing is not a factor.

However, even if you've bought as little as 16m2 before on that account, you're ineligible. Thuws it makes sense for everyone upgrading to premium to buy First Land, whether or not they want to - and then sell at market prices to neighbors if they don't want to hang onto it. Making a profit off your one and only chance to buy First Land is not only acceptable, it's encourged.

I'm personally waiting for SL to work out a few more bugs and become a little more stable before I start shelling out a monthly account and buying land.
