The extremely high visibility of the flashing tabs and shape changing outline that alerts us to the arrival of an incoming IM comes to naught if one is, say, closing one's eyes for a brief rest during a long session of SL. Accordingly, I suggest that an assortment of attention getting sounds be selected and activated whenever a new message arrives in the IM window. I propose as a starting assortment of sounds the following: shrill siren, baby crying, chalk squeaking on chalkboard, explosion, regurgitation, small dog barking, the Three Stooge's Curly's "Whoop Whoop Whoop", and Woody Woodpecker's laugh.

Perhaps more generally being able to assign sounds to UI events? You might even be able to do this already digging around the UI files, I'm not sure.
Ultimately I'd rather IMs be removeable from SL, and have them go through Jabber instead so I can deal with them on my other monitor ^^

Blood curdling scream, car crash, and atomic bomb explosion would also be good sounds to match the visual effect of 8 or 9 continuously flashing group IM tabs.
