I think that we should be able to upload whole songs for an in-game cost, and then have a way to check our "FTP", a server side resource that we can save a limited amount of textures and sounds to.

Let's be perfectly honest: Downloading ripped songs is illegal, but its one of the main draws that brought me to SL, the ability to upload my songs in my house and then having them hear them.

That's another point, we should have some kind of window that shows what kind of custom material is being uploaded to us so we can stop it or just observe what kind of files people use. Similar to KaZaA.

Just a few poorly though out ideas and suggestions, pick 'em apart.

Although this is a cool idea, I don't see it happening. I doubt a small company like Linden labs wants to get sued like Napster and KaZaA did. The only reason KaZaA survied is because they are in a different country. Linden Labs is in the good old US of A. Secondly, the way it is now, it is likely that everyone on your sim will hear it, which, if they have a different taste in music, will be VERY annoying for that person ;)

Yeah, that's why we need a music panel. Indicates what's playing in the sim, tells you who's playing it, and gives you the option to mute it.

As for the legality issue, I figure Linden Labs could get some kind of legal contract going that says in short "We are not responsible for files uploaded, nor do we support piracy". I don't know. It's just that one of the major draws of this game was being able to have dance parties with audio clips longer then 10 seconds.

Good idea but it won't legally work. If the music resides on their hard drives they legally are responsible for deletion.

But there are in existance some real good non-copyrighted music, I guess I should investigate and see if I can find em.

Bandwidth-wise it may be a problem, otherwise I don't see any reason individual users couldn't stream music (copyrighted or not). I mean, you can go right now download the shoutcast server and stream whatever you want to whoever you want. If you get a large number of listeners and get noticed you may end up having to pay the internet radio tax if they're even enforcing it.

If done in this manner, SL wouldn't be storing any copyrighted material. They would just be acting as a gateway for streaming content. Whatever we, as individual users, choose to stream is our business and Linden shouldn't be held responsible.

On the flip side, I can definately see why Linden wouldn't want to do it. While they would most definately come up clean in the whole deal, it could possibly cause them financial harm in dealing with legal proceedings.

My suggestion: Build an MP3 player into the SL client software. Then allow users to script objects to open a stream in that player. So I could stream whatever music I wanted using shoutcast server and have visitors to my house activate a stereo object which would open my stream in their internal MP3 player.
