Given that we are going to have voice chat and thus a bunch of people that are using SL while wearing microphone equipped headsets, why not incorporate voice recognition into the interface?

It might be nice to be able to say to an object "Rotate X 5 degrees, again, again. Move global Z 2.3 . Open inventory, file empty trash, close inventory. "

Stuff like that.

I don't know quite what to make of that.

It would be fun to make the syntax be like Forth, so people would have to speak in postfix notation and issue stack manipulation commands. Out loud. On Saturday night after a sixpack.

Hmm, drinking and voice recognition, I bet that's a problem.

LOL!! Voice Chat after a couple-a beers will be fun enough! But Voice Recognition would be neat!! Maybe even get it to activate the sounds people use. HEH- you wake your household one night by screaming "Hooooowwwwwwllllzzzzzz":D

I've written Forth on a saturday afternoon with a sixpack, the flu, and screaming kids, AND kept my stack discipline under control.

Mostly.

Sounds like fun. "Avatar! walk!". "Avatar! Teleport home!". "Avatar! Stop lagging!". "Program shutdown!"

"That was pretty bad there, Hah! However, voice-recognition for control can be more successful than general voice to text because it has a much more limited vocabulary to use." ~ unedited output of Naturally Speaking Voice to Text program.

The fact that Vista's speech recognition didn't work well at a demo doesn't say much to me one way or the other about the merits of the technology.

If a program's failure to operate properly means the idea behind it is a bad idea not worth developing then virtual world makers should all pack up and go home because Second Life has been demonstrating the concept's failure thousands of times a day for years.

I do like the idea. It is most likely the new age way of computer navigation in the future.

The Vista demo worked perfectly on the second try, AFTER they had gotten the barely discernable noise level down a bit more. Did you perform that dictation in a quiet room with your music off, or while you were online in SL with people playing audio "lol lol" and "howlz" gestures in the background?

I hate dictation devices because I hate playing back what I dictated and listening to my voice when time comes to transcribe it, and I've tried to find good voice transcription software, so I've used Naturally Speaking, too. I've even tried to use it for control: the only command I was ever able to get it to recognise reliably was "power off".
