Teleport: require initiation from Telehub

Require that an avatar be at a telehub before you can teleport to a desired location on the map. Keep updated maps at each telehub, where someone can click on a destination and be teleported there.

This would increase exploration and fly bys of all land.

We already have to fly through multiple sims in order to get to the one we want - and that's after it sends you to the closest teleporter.
Lets bring back teleportation to the exact location (I'd pay per trip like before).
I'm tired of getting stuck in laggy sims, losing attachments and being grumpy flying longer than I need to.

I don't like this suggestion. The current teleport model puts you multiple sims away from your destination and requires you to waste time flying there, caching tons of content you don't want. If people want to explore they can easily do so on their own. There's no reason to force it on them. There's nothing inherently good about exploring that even makes it something they should do. Plenty do it anyway.

This wouldn't meet a need, and it would cost time. Time that we could better spend meeting our needs. :)

I'll make the above posters' words mine, if they don't mind. The current model is already stupid enough.
Bandwidth is not free, and SL costs me far too much already.

I know I risk being berated for this, but I support the idea of outgoing telehubs.

My new land is far from a teleport. It'd be cool to see the builds on the way once, but after that it'd become a hassle.

I like the idea of bringing back direct teleportation for a small fee. I miss it hehe.

I dislike this idea (sorry hank :P), I hate having to teleport to a telehub as it is, its anoying, and time consuming, and often results in bumping into people or landing ontop of someone.

I would much rather have "My Picks" be directly teleportable to (no fee included), it would be the perfect solution, you get 10 places that you and anyone else can directly teleport to.

Also "My Land" should be directly teleportable (as the tooltip text when you hover over the Teleport button says "Teleport to the center of this plot.";), we own the land, why do we have to use a telehub to get there?

Telehubs are great for when you want to explore and start off at a point, or just hang out and talk to whoever comes by, but being forced to use them just sucks, not everyone likes to take trains, not everyone likes to fly, not everyone likes to drive in cars, I don't see how giving us more options to get to a destination is a bad thing.

I thinik this is a good idea. this might make the telehubs true centers for commerce now that you need to fly to them to teleport elsewhere, something the telehubs were supposed to do but failed. Good idea

Cubey, I liked you better when all you wanted was to make SL just like TOS. This is a ploy to sell more vehicles, isn't it?

Just kidding. ;)

No. Why not? In a word, griefers.

If a griefer is chasing or harrassing you, the best option is often just to leave. But if you can only run or fly, they can chase you and continue to harrass. (And before anyone suggests using a jetpack or other fly item, remember that those tools are available to griefers too.) But if you can teleport at will, you can escape effortlessly, and unless the griefer has your CC, you can't be followed. Likewise, teleport allows you to escape any attempt to trap your avatar in a prim cage or box.

For the sake of convenience, I like the idea of being able to teleport to any land that you own. But having the ability to teleport from anywhere is more than a convenience; it's an important form of protection.

I used to be in favor of this but Liberty is right. A way to escape is good.

I'd agree with Liberty on this front. There's also the possibility of the griefer "finding out where you live" ...

I don't know how many times I've saved my own butt when things got nasty, by just teleporting home.

Not to mention, with restricted builds on the rise, it may be pretty tough to get from A to B.

Also, some areas are only accessible via Jessie and Rauch. No one would survive the trip.

And, finally - Events would never start on time. Folks finding their way to the spot would take forever.

Now maybe if there was a real highway and better vehicle engine in SL, that might work... but as it stands, I think we need them.

I kind of like what Camille had in mind. When we click Teleport on the map, the options: "Pay for direct teleport? $L" and "Teleport to Telehub" could appear.

From this, in the preferences, we could have the option to set Telehub Teleports as the default, etc. if people don't want to spend money.

Devil's advocate:
You can teleport home, and you can ban everyone from your land.
You can also log out :)

Aside from all the "it'll get people to congregate in centralized areas and blah blah blah" talk from the Lindens, do you want to know the main reason for the telehubs? Simple: if we all had to fly around the world, Linden Lab's bandwidth bills would be much higher.

I wonder if he meant that teleporting from point A to point B takes you to telehub T just as it does now. But when point A aleady IS a telehub, you can teleport direct to point B.

That sorta makes the telehubs useless and anyoning. If I want to get somewhere fast, I'd teleport to the nearest hub, wait for enough of the area to load that I can get my map up and teleport to my destination. That's a lot of loading a location that I'm not going to stay at.

If it's just a case of reversing the way telehubs work (fly from A to T, then teleport direct to B) then its no better than what we have now, and slightly worse for reasons stated already in this thread.

From a purely technical standpoint, the telehubs put a larger strain on the system. My destination may be two sims away from a hub, but I have to stream all the people at the hub, the stuff around the hub, and everything between the hub and my destination. And in most cases, I'll be long gone before it's all fully loaded.

It's slow and a huge bandwidth waster.

But for all of that, there are social reasons for the telehubs: division of urban and rural, automatic gathering points, a boon to privacy (no one TPing into your living room unannounced),...

But. I don't know about you guys... But I NEVER hang around hubs. I have my fly key held down before the screen clears from black. If I'm part of a group that is moving as a unit, ONE person does the flying, then TPs everyone else in. If it wasn't for the Offer Teleport button, I'd never go anywhere.

EDIT:
My vote is ALWAYS for direct (free) teleport to landmarks. That'll also help the landless who can't set a HOME point, even if they are living on someone else's land.

Player owned teleport destinations?
05-06-2004 14:07
Here's what I'd love to have:

Player owned in-bound teleport pads, used only when a player is teleporting into a parce that has one. Or even have it as a checkbox on the parcel, like Teleport Ok, allowing people to jump
straight to the mark set for the parcel. (But if you target parcel without teleport-ok set, send the player to the nearest telehub as usual)

An alternative would be to allow players to have multiple homes. It's annoying to fly via telehub everytime you're going from one building project to another. (I know I CAN'T be the only one with this gripe).

And, I have to disagree with limited teleport-away. For players who can't figure out how to escape a containment attack, or who get lost/trapped inside labyrinthian buildings, or stumble into a particle/prim/script-based lag hell, teleport-away/teleport-home *must* exist.

While I'm all for increasing folks desire to explore, i think that -forcing- them to cover more territory by limiting teleport will only result in people travelling about even less out of frustration.

On the flip side.. there is something to be said for living far from telehubs... you get fewer people over who aren't specifically intending to be there. That kind of privacy/quietness can be a benefit. :)
