Offline object creation: Quick Hack?

Just thought of this, and I'm not sure it can work like I'm thinking, but I thought I'd throw it out for you all to see.

Essentially, a quick hack way to get offline editing would be to use existing modelers that allow you to create primitives, or, for a programmer to create a program that would create objects in the same fashion that SL does in world. The trick then is to get the program to save the object you just made as a Second Life script that would, when activated, Build the object by scripting. It would require either a full program, or, someone who can program a plugin for a 3D modeling program. (IE, Export plugin for MilkShape 3D or 3D Studio Max)

Texturing might have to be done manually, but otherwise, I think this would be a way to do things.

So, can scripts create primitives?

That is an amazingly cool idea, and I would completely be up for writing the software, but unfortunately there is no way to create or modify the primitives from a script. A script can only rez objects already in it inventory, it cannot create objects with new properties (size, type, cut, shear), nor can it modify the properties of the object on which it exists.

Lindens, if this feature is added in the form of:
llCreatePrimitive(integer type, vector pos, vector size, float cut_start, float cut_stop ........ )
with all the properties as arguments (I know not all primitives use the same properties, but it can just ignore the arguments that are irrellevant)
or
llCreateSphere, llCreateBox... for all types of primitives

I will be willing to take a crack at writing a modeller, or a plug-in for an existing, free, modeller (probably gmax) that will do exactly what Ryozu suggests.

Great Idea!

The offline editor and uploaders and things have been asked for many times, and I don't think we're going to get them, mostly because they would be a lot of work for the developers, and not very useful after the beta.

But how 'bout this: There's no way I could justify installing and running SL at work, but sometimes I want to quickly edit a note or upload a texture or whatever. Would it be possible to have some sort of web-based interface to our inventories?

What I'm thinking is that you log in to a web page, and you can see a file-manager type thing with all your inventory items in it. Things can be deleted, renamed, copied locally, and in some cases added (I'm thinking specifically of textures and notecards, but scripts would be possible too if someone wanted to put the script compiler in to a cgi).

Thoughts?

WG, I like your idea, and I asked for it (outside the forums) not too terribly long ago (although I asked for FTP -- same concept). I tried the "it'd offset server load, because we'd be able to upload at any time, not just during world hours" as well as the "sometimes I just can't get a tex/sound TO upload, no matter what the conditions are, and it's veddddy frustrating" routes. Neither flew.

Seems they had already discussed something of this sort and decided that (a) they didn't want to hassle with the additional authentication, and (b) they WANT the servers overloaded, for the obvious reasons.

I understand both objections.

I'd still be willing to pay double for anything I uploaded via web or ftp. Especially after trying *33* times last night to upload six 9 second sound clips (of "here comes the bride" -- I had NOT intended to hum it! <G>;).

uploading out of world will be pointless once the world is up all the time.

Like nada, I just want to be able to access object attributes from a script.
