I was thinking it would be very helpful and convienent to add instancing to SL. Create a master copy of something like a notecard and create insances of it. Then you can distribute the instances and any changes made to the original card would occur on the instances people have. No having to redistribute cards when you make a new version, Groups can have a To Do or News card so everyone knows whats going on and other helpful things. This would also eliminate the need to go to an Events Board to get the events for the day. You could have an Events for the Day card that is an instance of a card the Lindens update, now when you log on if you have that card you know whats happening without having to go grab a new card. Just something to think about..

I like it.
In fact I'd like to see it fleshed out into an automated distribution system. Programmers use CVS (Concurrent Version System) to manage their source code. It would be nice if we could use this to offer updates on scripted objects we sell. So I would have two branches - one for beta testing code, and one for production code. Anyone who buys a scripted object from me can check the production branch to see if there is a newer version, and if so, they can instruct SL to insert it into their gizmo.
Objects for sale would have the ability to be linked to a CVS repository specific to that object.
You wouldn't necessarily want it limited to note cards and scripts, either. CVS could be used to exchange the customer's object for a newer version of same. That way, they get the benefit of texture fixes, etc.
Obviously this would be somewhat complex... it would be nice to see it in 1.2 or 1.3. Perhaps they could just start out with your idea of a "centrallized" notecard.

Yeah just seeing it start with notecards and expand as SL grows I'm sure it would simplify a lot of things in the long run. No more running to the Events Board for me!

Well we are getting a global worldwide obj to obj comm system, so couple it with the most requested scripting feature llWriteToTheGodDamnNotecardsAlready, and you can easily implement self updating notecard dispensers. The only problem is that you cant change stuff already in a users inventory, but if the user rezzes his notecard dispensing object, it could update on rez.

From: someone Originally posted by Eggy Lippmann llWriteToTheGodDamnNotecardsAlready, Amen. As far as the actual topic, ,yes, I think the concept would be quite nice, espcially scripts. It got real old updating 64 squares worth of scripts for my chessboard (which is part of the reason I have not did another bug fix yet....)
