Urban Sims

Have you longed to live the downtown city life? Move into an Urban sim! These zones are handled by more powerful servers capable of serving up 2-3 times the number of prims and twice the number of avatars per square meter.

Perfect for shopping and entertainment, these areas are sure to be a concentration of great activities. Build an apartment tower, or a store packed with goods. Open a nightclub and invite ALL your friends. It's prime real estate, right next door to everything.

Sales prices for land in Urban sims run $4.5L/m^2 for PG areas and $9L/m^2 for Mature areas. Each square meter you own requires double the land use fees, so if you own 1000m^2 you'll need to tier up for 2000.

Wilderness Sims

Do you desire room to roam? Are you looking to live on a country estate, or on an island out on the wide blue sea? Perhaps you'd like to open up a mountain resort! If so, then the new Wilderness Sims are for you.

A single server hosts up to four sims, resulting in a land area 512 meters on a side with ultrasmooth border handoffs! You'll only get 1/4th the number of prims per square meter, but the land is cheap and there's plenty of terrain to get lost in the middle of.

Sales prices for land in Wilderness sims run $1L/m^2 for PG areas and $2L/m^2 for Mature areas. Each square meter you own requires only 1/4 the land use fees, so you can own over 2000m^2 at the initial tier of just 512!

Growing tired of the endless pastoral paradise that is SL today? Do you pine for the frozen fjords of Greenland? Are you homesick for the red canyons of your native Mars? If so, you'll be happy to know that new terrains are on their way!

The Great Western Desert

Out beyond the fabled city of Nova Albion there lies a vast and desolate wilderness, full of dry lake beds, sere dune fields and rocky sun-scorched mesas. This new continent is due to rise very soon!

The Frozen North

Far off the Los Angeles coast of our current northern region lies a land of towering fjords, glaciers, and frigid oceans full of icebergs! And in appropriate defiance both polar bears and Penguins(TM) have been spotted splashing among the ice floes. Certain areas of this land are known to be extra slippery, so watch your footing (or get out the skis and skates)!

The Moon and Mars, and the Space in between

Further in the future a fundamental shift is planned in the structure of the SL world. In addition to growing outwards, it will grow upwards! Above the surface world we've come to love, two new grid levels will open up! The first of these will be open space. These regions will be empty at first, until the inhabitants below come up with appropriate technologies for reaching orbit. There will be no gravity here, hence up and down may become confused.

Above the space sims new Lunar and Martian terrain will grow. But, be forewarned, the land in these regions is literally over our heads! Gravity pulls the opposite direction, you view will flip over as you enter, and the land surface is at the "top" of the sim.

The new Lunar sims will go into place over Tethys and Metis initially, and the Martian sims will start initially over the site of the Space Elevator in Gray. Initially accessing these areas will require the use of space vehicles, or taking a ride on the Gray Space Elevator or from the new Spaceport City opening up east of Tethys. As these areas expand Linden expects to advance the science of interplanetary teleportation, but initially you will need to cross the distance via these special transport sites.

Future Planning

The Open Seas

Expanding on the Wilderness Sims, we are currently testing the ability of a server to host an entire ocean connecting the continents! The vast open seas will have severely limited overall prim counts, but we expect to offer tiny skerries here and there for habitation. In addition, the seas will soon get deeper! New Submarine Sims will be accessible from under the water surface in selected Oceanic Sims. Further details later on.

How's the weather?

Along with the new ocean and desert sims, expect to see new and varied types of weather! Residents of the current temperate climes can expect more of the same, but those exploring the artic wastes can expect blizzards, those in the desert will experience blinding sandstorms, and those who venture out on the open oceans may run into hurricanes!

Downtown Portals

Get ready for the city life to get even more lively and dense! Soon you will be able to install a portal as your condo or storefront door. This will take you instantly into a separate, private simspace, where your home or store or nighclub may expand without impact on your neighbors. Picture a city full of towers and clubs and outlet stores where every doorway leads to a new fully detailed habitation and where your prims per square meter can jump into the dozens.

Other types of portals will soon be available, meaning potentially you could walk through a doorway in a busy downtown neighborhood and find yourself on a peaceful, private beach miles from nowhere.

These are all great ideas, just one FYI:

From: someone
These zones are handled by more powerful servers capable of serving up 2-3 times the number of prims and twice the number of avatars per square meter.

Every time this topic has been brought up, the impression is made that the limits on prims and avatars isn't a bottleneck with the servers, but with the client.

If they increase the prim allocations without increasing the client's performance, they'll have to raise the minimum system spec requirements statement for what kind of computer you need to run the client software.

I guess we'll find out when the new city opens up west of Luna. It'll have the sort of densities we're talking about, just not across the whole sim. Potentially though there will be spots that strain the client this way since huge numbers of prims and avs could be in view.

Sorry about that. :D

This is Feature Suggestions, not Feature Preview.

Coming Soon!

More than enough land for everyone! Enough to make every land seller (good or evil) lose money on the deal. Not too likely. But the other parts might. Wouldn't it be cool?

I like the Mars one, considering current events:

Announcer: Come to Mars, Leave your troubles and worries behind!

Announcer: We spoke with Bob Crachet, resent Mars colonist about his experiences...

Crachet: It looked like Arizona in the pictures, I had no idea it was 200 degrees below zero. I didn't even bring a sweater!

Announcer: Amaze your friends with the science of Mars! Throw a bucket of water on the ground, place bets on whether it will freeze first or evaporate!

Crachet: I can't believe the cost of Perier here. $600 for a tiny bottle, this is outrageous! They TOLD me there was plenty of water here!

Announcer: Get yourself in tip-top Aerobic shape as you struggle to breath in Mars' 1% atmosphere.

Crachet: *gasp*, Oh shoot, I need to change my oxygen tank. BRB.

Announcer: Come to Mars!... The sim that's um... Not made for everybody! *cough* *stagger* Am I still on the air?

Figure that they've already melted the ice caps, introduced greenhouse gasses, aerobraked and blown up a dozen icy planetoids from the Saturnian system in the upper atmosphere, and laid down a carpet of simple xerophytes across the landscape and -- voila -- quasi-terraformed Mars with a breathable atmosphere. You do the rest.

Me, I wonder why we stop at such pedestrian-if-interesting environments. I want to own --

-- an entire sim-comet fragment, in an eccentric orbit around the sun, where I can watch the pretty outgassing displays, everyday.

-- a silicon-sulfur volcano in a series of Io sims, where the sky is lit up in colorful, blinding flashes by electrical discharges between Io and Jupiter.

-- a nitrogen glacier on Triton, oldest and strangest of the planetary moons, circling close in above the atmosphere of Neptune.

-- a part of -the- "Canyon" on Miranda, where the walls are sixty miles deep and the canyon floor is the core elemental of that moon.

If land and environment are key interests in SL, why do we stick with semi-tropical archipelagos? That's great, but even paradise gets old.

The Moon and Mars, and the Space in between? When? When?

Oooh.... it's a dead thread from the previous century :)
