Why not a chat log viewer, with text search, built into the interface.

I don't want to alter chat records. If you alter them, then they aren't really records of what was said anymore. You can search the text easily enough outside of SL, of course, just as you can use a good scripting editor outside of SL interface, or shop effectively outside of the SL interface, or use a good IM program outside of the SL interface, or share full sized non-compressed images outside of SL.

A text editor built in the SL interface would suit me fine too, one that could open a file on your hard drive and save as a notecard or script or group notice, vice versa, and other such SL related text functions,
