From what I have heard, the physics engine is one of the largest hits to the servers running the sims. I believe many of the players, such as myself, don't really use physics (besides perhaps the basic idea of gravity to keep our avatars down, and to create solid walls.). Perhaps there could be sims where the more fancy physics would not function, which allow the server more power to handle objects, scripts, etc....

Yes I agree, we should have it also where we can disable all physical objects on our land just like we do scripts, but a full sim with no physics would be a great performance sim, especially for events and meeting places.

Yes, if anything, the sims Ahern and Morris need to be physics free, so that no avatar with a huge physical thingy can come in and lag the simulator down for newbies. Thats a great way to lose potential customers.

I agree, wholly... there is the problem of not being able to use function calls that require physics though...
I still like the concept, and a bit more flexibility to what can and cant be done on our land would be nice too. -Chris _____________________

I don't believe we would loose too much without the physic functions... Still will get llSetPos and llSetRot.. I can't say I really have ever seriously used physics and nor do most things I see in the world. |

And people do indeed use physics there. ![]() I don't know enough about these things to say whether or not it would help, but since I'm running the bottom rung of video cards and can't afford a better, /anything/ to move faster would be greatly appreciated. I'm in a nearly empty sim, and I'm getting a max of 13 fps. ------------------------------------ Coming soon, Acacia Treetop Living! Darkwood Sim. Yuki Sunshine |

lol Yuki
Maybe we need to have the land option to turn physics off instead of having to make an entire sim non physical. That would prevent the problem of communities that might be in that sim. ![]() |

I think the physics-free sim and the physics land controls are great ideas… except I don’t want Yuki to have controls like that. My favorite hobby in SL now is to create animals and fling them at Yuki and Taessa with the Darkwood Catapult. The sheep and pigs like the exercise too. (:
(Don't worry this is happening in the new Darkwood sim hehe) |

So that's what that suspicious sheep screaming and the flying pigs was all about!
(Do you hear the lambs screaming, Clarice?) By the way, my mom just about busted a gut when I pulled out the camera and showed her sheep and pigs flying over onto my land! The catapult is a great way to quickly get from one side of the sim to the other by the way ![]() Heh. Okay, back on topic. I agree with you James. My 1/16th piece of property was all bought in 16x16 chunks to make reshaping the land easier. I could do something like, only make the chunk of my land that has the elevator on it physics-enabled, then turn it off the rest of my land. Physics option on-demand, rather than having it default to something that can eat resources. |

Just curious. If the sim, or an appreciably large chunk of land were "physocs free" what would happen to an physica-enabled airship flying overhead?
Would there a someway to know ahead of time as you approached the area? Would the airship crash to the ground? Would it just stop in the air and refuse to repond to script commands that try to push it along? Just curious. Plus I do use physics-enabled equipment to fly faster. Would that stop functioning as well? Hmmmmmm. _____________________

Well, before we made up our mind on this it would be nice to have a "practice" sim to see just how much of a difference "no-physics" makes. If we could cram 5 times as many objects and/or users into such a sim it would be a great place to have meetings etc.
If on the other hand it only made things 10% faster, I'm not sure most people would want the trade-off. |

Doesn't the exist "no outside scripts" option already kill the scripts in your physical objects, and possinly cause a stall? I don't know.. my flight objects don't use physics.... |

If "no outside scripts" were used on my catapulted animals, I think all it would do is cause the animals to not die or make sounds if they stopped on your property (they are on a llDie countdown when they are rezzed). They would still come into the property because the physics is not set in the script.
Just giving you an example of it... I think the "no outside scripts" would prevent anything fancier from working, though... (: |
