I think you should explain more, but from the discription of llSetMass you gave in the other thread, I agree

heh you're right.
well currently mass is determined by the size of the object. (i'm pretty sure thats right) if we could set mass we could more easily create things that acted like heavy or light objects regardless of size. Like a vehicle could drive into a avatar and send them flying appropriately. It would help for elevators and such that an avatar could easily push by walking into. uh maybe i said it better in the other thread. |

Or perhaps a giant block of styrofoam that didn't weigh as much as a whale, and a small bar of iron that weighed more than a broomstick?

Ope as I understand this is a coming feature of materials. Right now all materials (wood/glass/metal/etc.) have the same density...but in some time they will be be different. The physical properties of materials seem to be in place to some extent...for example, when building say an axle with braces to hold it to the vehicle, if you make it all glass it will have less friction (but the same mass as wood metal etc.), so will roll easier. In the future that friction trick will cost you in mass.
How would setmass work? Say I had a cube, and wanted to double the mass. So I just llSetMass, and now it's a denser cube; we are all promoted to alchemist. Or would it size the cube up/down to achieve the new mass? You could alter the material (in the future) to alter mass, but being able to do this with a script call would compromise a lot of realism (my cube is flying...hey now it's metal...hey now it's glass...). _____________________

ah, thats a good point. yeah, just having the option of different materials/densities would be great. so i guess not a script call though.
didn't know it was a coming feature. glad to hear it ![]() |

I don't think that would solve the problem, if you make a 10x10x10 ball and put it in a giant tube, and then let it fall on you, I don't believe you get killed or anything, it just stops above your head.

well i don't think theyre gonna let us crush an avatar. if its got something behind it thats not moving then it shouldn't move either.

Well with the other idea of the changed physics it won't crush an avatar, but it won't stop either (it goes trough him).

How about when it drops on an avatar it squishes down like in cartoons and doesn't get killed

Hikaru, your comment just made me think of what should be our theme song. It wouldn't need very much mofidification to really *fit* SL =)
Yakko Warner (the Animaniacs) singing "I Am The Very Model Of A Cartoon Individual" I am the very model of a cartoon individual My animation's comical, unusual and whimsical I'm quite adept at funny gags; comedic theory I have read From wicked puns and stupid jokes to anvils that drop on your head. I'm very good at fancy dances; I can even pirouette Then smack the villain with a fish; I know my cartoon etiquette I can make my face all mean and really give you quite a fright Then make up with flowers made of real exploding dynamite. When in a jam I just yell "stop" and villains in their tracks are froze Then I sneak up and utter "start" and take my hands and honk their nose I am quite proud to be in such a hierarchial progeny From Daffy Duck and Tweety Bird to Babs and Buster Bunny. To suit my mood I can call forth a lot of different sceneries Like outer space and desert scapes and Himalayan eateries From this bag here why I can pull most anything imaginable Like office desks and lava lights and Bert who is a cannibal. [YW+D:] You see, in matters comical, unusual, and whimsical We are the very model of cartoon individuals! _____________________

haha squish it like a cartoon
![]() ![]() Now ope, you can still make vehicles with it. The object WILL push an avatar, unless the avatar get's stuck between the moving object and the 'simple physics' object... |
