Basically what it says. I want an option to upload our entire persona into SL, leaving behind our physical bodies.
How soon do you think LL will implement this?

Considering the rate at which technology is advancing in the necessary fields, and LL's prompt deployment of technology, I'd say somewhere around the year 2138.

Wednesday.
(by that, I mean "on a wednesday, but I can't tell you which one" ![]() I'd also not ever want to be the beta tester for that kind of system. Imagine what happens if there's a hiccup in the server. Oh wait, you can't: you suddenly ceased to exist. |

Ouch. I hope this would not lead to any Lawnmower Man-themed greif antics... Imagine when the grey goo strikes.

I find it distressing enough when things vanish from the asset servers as it is, thank you very much.

Um...but you would own yourself, so you could probably set your own permissions?

Uploading Self is all well and good until theres a Grid Crash.
Then your stuck in some virtual horizonless Plane .. with your hair and shoes stuck up you butt, unable to log back off into reality. And thats not even mentioning what happens to the people the Asset server "loses" |

...as someone stuck in Cleveland 50 years now I really resemble that remark...
as to the question? UpLoading without an as feasible means of downloading (for RL integration) into better than human body, is something I'd only do if death and disintgration was the only other option. I'd guess 20 years for hardware adequate to hold a running human level mind. less than that for the scanning resolution and storage capacity to make a reproducable but static backup. mayby only ~5 years for that. And as someone may have hinted it's not "How do we prove we're not in the matrix?" the extrapolation of our technology implies that in some far future most computer will be capable of rendering "indistinguisable from reality" worlds. so it's a question of probabilities. Is it more likely ours is the "original' root reality of all? or is it more likelt to be one out of several thousand trillion(a very low estimate BTW, given not just some future number of computers at one point in time but of all such cabable computers ever for all time). That said I'm glad the OP only asked about the feasibility and not the usuall questions of morality/soul/(which is the real you) philosophical questions that have been done to death. _____________________

Well, yes!
I have been dreaming about this already. Somebody worded it in a very negative way, but look on the bright side: If you are going to die and it is possible to transfer your conciousness into a computer... Please do! It is either that or stop to exist. The first time I had this thought was when we only had email, gopher, veronica (if anyone remembers who gopher and veronica were), but still: Cogito ergo sum! And I think today SL would be the environment of choice to upload my conciousness. |

Current scanning methods (MRI/CAT) only are able to deliver Voxels which fail to define the Gigabytes of neurological data hidden behind their own Volume. A rather crude resolution still. fMRI and Defuse scanning offer some insight, but it's like listening to the mechanical sounds of a locomotive to try to visualize the mechanics inside.
Current (realistic) prospects may lie in the corner of Gamma-radiation Lasers. A low-power emission of a coherent beam of this frequency has the wavelength capable of capturing molecular-level of detail of the brain. Theoretically, through holography techniques, 3D data could be gathered that define the brain. |
