It is nice to belong to groups, but sometimes you just do not want to be spammed by group IM traffic. It would be a nice feature to allow muting a group, allowing your continued membership without always having to be spammed.

I don't think this is in yet in even 1.12. Is it? I can't find it! This feature is CRITICAL for live performers like me, since our hands are AFK while we're playing guitar (or whatever), and a huge Group IM blast obscures the on-screen chat from our audience. It really degrades the performer-audience interaction to not be able to make out what they're saying, because some group you're in is going crazy with an IM conversation. And you have to wait until you're done with the tune, or whatever your hands are occupied with, before you can close out the group IM window. I would disable IM from all of my groups while I'm peforming, so I can focus on my audience and IMs from my audience members.

Any "push" communications feature should have a disable option on the receiving end. It's hard to understand how LL hasn't done this from the start. It's a core priniciple in messaging software design, withouit it, you enable spam, which includes forcing the receiver to close a window when they're doing other things.

You should read this discussion where this idea was brought up previously and got a Linden response.

Being able to make them just not show up in the proximity chat would be nice.

A different color for local proximity chat, person to personal IMs, and group chat might not be bad either.

I would really like to be able to have the proximity chat be nothing but proximity chat, without having to switch to the chat history.

Agreed.
But I had ever seen "Mute Group" command on a preview client before although I couldn't test it. Wasn't it loaded?

The Mute Group that was mentioned was not referring to being able to mute the chat from groups we are in.

The place where the word "mute" was close to "group" was talking about being able to mute group objects.

Release Notes for Second Life 1.12.0(13) August 23, 2006
=====================================

* Group-owned objects can be muted
** If a group owned object offers you an item, the blue box will say "Keep", "Discard", and "Mute"
** Mute adds the group to your Mute List and all objects owned by that group will be muted
** Muted group owned objects will not be able to IM you or send you items

In this thread Kelly Linden talks about muting group chat.

Thank you for clarifying it. :)

This might not be a solution for everyone, but I have my chat color set to one color and the IM color remains white, that way I can distinguish between chat and IMs, I think that's what Suzanne was saying about colors.

You can choose whether or not you receive group notices, the blue ones that come up on the top of the screen. There is a box on the lower right of the main group page that says Receive Group Notices.

I have left a couple groups because of the constant event spamming. Not just at the beginning of the event, but throughout....it's like we get it, you're having an event!

That's group notices, the blue dialog boxes, we're talking about muting group IM sessions.

What is a push communication? I thought this was referring to the blue dialog boxes.

The answer was in the previous paragraph, wasn't it?
