EURO as base currency instead of US$

As a european customer and content creator I'd like to see a change from US$ to EURO as the currency that the L$ can be directly converted to.
The permanent fall of the US$ makes prices fall all the time for everyone who is not a US citizen.
Since people from the US are now a smaller minority on the grid than ever, I'd really like to see this in the near future.

LL is a US company, why should they deal in any currency other than USD?

What about the good old pound Sterling? Even more stable than the Euro, go the British!

Why should they deal with other currency than the failing dollar, well because the majority of SL users are european, because the USD failure is unstoppable and any business wants to deal with a currency that is stable. The age of the "allmighty" dollar is over, LL should change over to the best candidate for the new international currency (currently euro).

Alternatively what you can do is make a inworld currency exchange server, that grabs quotes from yahoo, link that up to all your vendors so your prices on items automaticaly change in almost realtime as the dollar collapses. (alternatively make a inflation server where you update current inflation manualy to adjust for currency exchange imbalance)... Alternatively what you can also do is multiply your monthly gross revenues by 12, goto your bank and ask for a USD foreign currency loan for that ammount, use the monthly netprofit to pay it off to balance back the currency exchange losses.

The only way the FED could stop the dollar from falling would be by adjusting interrest rates upto 15-30% levels, but that ofcourse won't happen because it would worsen the trade imballance with China, destroy usbased industries and blow an "armageddon" on real estate&banking industry. At some point the fed will perhaps set it's interrest rates at 0% or below if the economy doesnt pickup (and i strongly suspect it wont pickup). USD is the worst choice of currency if we exclude zimbabwe's currency.

If you own land and have to pay tier, then it is currently cheaper, if you convert euro to dollars you get more dollars and the same applies to Sterling at the current exchange rates.

Membership / Tiers2048sqm
US Dollar 9.95 / 15.00

Euro 7.31 / 11.02

Total US Dollar 24.95
Euro 18.33

Thats working it on 1.00 euro will get you 1.36 US Dollars. Although todays rate is nearer 1.39.

However if this was to go down then the cost would go up for European landowners and premium members.

Even at 1.25 to the Euro, this would cost us Europeans 19.96 a month so at the moment its a much better deal. I remember when the Dollar was at about 1.15 to the Euro then that would be even worse.

I understand your question but I don't think unless you ar dealing in massive amounts of Dollars and Lindens it can have that great effect. Alternatively, hold back cashing your lindens until the dollar gets weak, but that is not going to happen to soon.

I found this a very interesting thread. I know very very little about programming etc, but maybe a feature in 'preferences' as to which currency you'd like to be your base one. I understand that LL is a US based company, but as many other people have already mentioned, SL's customer base doesn't only exist in the US but all over the world, especially Europe, and after all, surely the customer must come first...(yeah right!! :-)

I personally would find it much easier to deal with Euro's as my base currency, not that I have that much currency to deal with :-)

doesn't make a difference to the price you earn by trading in lindens, unless you keep a cash balance on your account for a long time.

EX Europeans have more relative cash to buy on lindens, therefore have a greater demand since it's cheaper.

if the linden cash price if falling at the same rate as the US dollar you should put up a me worry sign. (silently cash out as you realize that the market price for lindens are fixed)

How many in this thread have tried WICS as a solution?

It handles a few currencies, US, EU, AU, and Lindens.

Why shouldn't [LL deal in Euros]?
Umm, maybe because they haven't quite figured out how to handle their native currency reliably yet?

Hey, I think we should all march around the World, and tell every company we come across, that they should use whatever dollar is best at that time. And, if it happens to change a month later, we will march around the World once more whining, crying and thumbs stuck deep in our mouths, that we want whatever is best at the moment! Who's down for this? We can start an evolution! God forbid a company goes by what their country does. That is CRAZY! So, lets all meet at my house and get this party started. Make sure to bring hiking boots, tennis shoes, flip flops...ect. Dress for the weather, it will be ever changing. And be prepared for let down! Hey, then again, I don't know much about money and all that, but....if Euro is better then USD, like..you get more for your buck, why would you want a dollar that is even with you, instead of taking the slight gains that you're getting, already? Well, no matter. Meet here. 10:00PM sharp, less traffic, and it's cooler weather. Ack, time frames! Maybe we should go with the lowest one at the moment? If we run quickly, very quickly, we should be able to keep up with the ever-changing time too. Oh well, let's set this evolution! We're going to change time and currency, forever!!!

as a US citizen that'd suck for me, i'd rather see it go to british pounds if it really needed to change. Besides, LL is US based and it would be silly for them to switch to euro unless they switched location.

would be nie to be able to convert linden into multiple currency but then everything would get more complex

Convert to the Euro? Yes, that's what LL needs, scrutiny by the Federal Trade Commission and IRS as well as the FBI.

I suppose if we think hard enough we can get the FDA involved too.

With the exchange rate at nearly two dollars to the quid I'm more than happy to pay in US dollars, even with foreign currency fees applied.

Linden Lab makes money off the falling dollar.

Since the value of the US$ is falling, and a large percentage of Second Life residents live outside the US, you would expect the L$ to raise in value relative to the US$.

But that's not happening, since Linden Lab sells L$ on the Lindex, taking in US$. The more the US$ falls, the more L$ they can sell while still keeping the L$/US$ ratio constant.
