We need a way to take a region name and convert it to world coordinates. Conversely, we need a way to convert region coordinates or world coordinates to a region name. Will LL please add these?

I've used a script and notecard for this purpose, but it's becoming necessary for me to split my notecard solution in to more than one script, wasting resources.

If only we had outgoing XML-RPC... I could set up a web service for this.

Or once I learn how to check email using PHP, I can also offer it.

External programming need not apply. This is something that would be more efficient to handle in-world. It's a simple conversion between world coordinates and the sim name that is associated with those coordinates, and vice versa.

I wouldn't have a use for this myself yet, but wouldn't be against it being implemented.

Id like this, I think I was actually the first one to propose something like this (see this reply to the "Wanted: your top 5 ways to improve scripting" Feature Feadback post)

An offline database would be totally inconveniant for something like this, since there would be no way to know (without human intervention) when a sim is added to the grid. This would be a perfect feature for LL to implement, since they could make it so that it automatically updated when simulators were added to the grid.

This would be great for pathfinding. Right now you have to update everything manually.

Here is a link to the 2 scripts and notecard that I currently use to get the same functionality...

So your saying that your script automatically updates itself when a new sim is added? :p

er...Good Point! They don't update automatically, but they provide the same functionality of doing the conversion, which LL would be in a better position to handle. :D

Even though I did suggest XML-RPC to begin with, that's currently hobbled, and the 10 second timeout's a bitch.

I support LL putting these functions into LSL. At worst it would end up a dataserver call, which is slow, but at least it's accessible if the grid is.

The problem with XML-RPC is that it isn't reliable. What if the server is down? I can't access your server, only my own server. What if I don't own a server? What if I buy something that relies on XML-RPC, and then the person who made it disappears from SL?

LSL shouldn't be "frozen", and rely on external solutions to expand the scripting capabilities in-world. If LSL is dead, and we have to setup our own servers to get things done, I will quit SL.

I understand your problems with XML-RPC, however I thought I covered the reliability issue with my referring to a dataserver/native call perhaps being slow but at least "accessible if the grid is"

Throws styrofoam brick at Konigmann Lippmann, that bounces off lightling and falls to the ground. A note is attached and it reads...
