Add another way for people to verfy their age...Simple enough..
I used to work for an american company and they are no longer allowed to ask for the last 4 of a SSN by law for anything. Also I dont trust your SSL connection or the fact you have it on some server somewhere...All you need is one good hacker and BAM, identy theft....

For canada...asking for the entire SIN is a bad idea in general...you want all of ours make the states do the same or vice versa....its just not fair in anyway shape or form and I for one dont trust it as far as i can throw it.

The age verfycation thing is baised around assuming people have the decency on no lieing about their age....A kid could swipe their parents drivers licence and their they go...

Id say remove it till something better that does not involve giving out personal information comes along. I know I'm not the only one who thinks this.

Yes a kid can take their parents ID and use t to get into SL BUT, the point is IF they do that and the parent learn that the child has seen something they find offensive then LL Is not held accountable for that child being allowed into an adult area. Much the same as in RL a person using fake ID. If it looks like the real thing then hard to say the person should of known IF the person looked like the age they are claiming.
No system is perfect and ALL systems I am sure in the future will have someone finding a way around. Simple fact in SL you can choose not to verify, you can choose to use one of the cons ppl are posting in the forum to sign up. BUT if found out that you have used a fake ID ( a dead person) I am sure LL will boot your backside out of SL

It's on "some server somewhere" in a form that's completely unreadable by any human.

Actually it is not illegal for a private business to ask for your SSN. You don't have to give it to them, but they can deny you their services or not acept your application if you are applying for a job. Once the have your number, they are restricted in how they use it, depending on the particular state laws.

Verification double talk

Why should LL ask for verification ID's at all?

To quote Windswept-- "Yes a kid can take their parents ID and use t to get into SL BUT, the point is IF they do that and the parent learn that the child has seen something they find offensive then LL Is not held accountable for that child being allowed into an adult area."

It has been a while since I created an account in SL, but last I checked, don't they ask if you are an adult in the TOS? If LL is trying to cover their virtual bumms, doesn't the agreement to the TOS do that? Why require documentation?

If a minor wants to lie in the TOS, they can also grab a parents DL and continue the same lie.

I'm sure LL pays good money to legal advisers, which can speak 'legaleeze' and perpetuate the paranoia, thus keeping them on the payroll.

A lie is a lie. Whether it is a TOS lie, or a false documentation lie.

If I lie, and create an account for my doggie, using a friends DL#, agree with the TOS, and arrive in-world in a matter of minutes, would I need to go to an 'Adult' sim to purchase a leg-hump animation?

THat what I was saying before...The TOS is suspose to cover most problems that arise...

Brenda: They arnt asking for the whole SSN for the people in the states...they only ask for the last 4...You cant get much from the last 4 of a SSN...They are asking for All the digits of a Canadian SIN - The reletive equivlent to the american SSN. Thats where the problem is...Asking people, other then americans, to give out more information then they need.

LL should make everything equal and eather make it so people outside the US not need to give up all the digits to something like a SIN or ID number....

OR

LL should make americans give up all their SSN to make that equal to the rest.

But if the latter were to happen then the US would kick up a stink about it saying something along the lines of 'identy theft' or the like and LL would have more on their hands.
