could we have a flag that allowed us to make ourselves anonymous on the leader boards? Not a problem i personally have, but from listenting to people talk about it... it is completely understandable that people might not want everyone to know that they are hugely successful.

Yeah, I'm with you Nada. Some people are not here to play the numbers game, and such a feature would be perfect for them...

Sorry to disagree, but i think that feature would make the leader board meaningless and make it easier to hide money exploits or unethical practices.
I think if you are successful or popular, a certain amount of feedback comes with the territory. If you rise to the top and are uncomfortable with that kind of visibility, you can always choose to change your behavior.
Basically, the open-ended, self-governed culture of Second Life means we rely on social feedback and community expectations to make the world run semi-smoothly.
Part of the mechanism is the leader board. It lets us all see if the systems is being used, or abused (as was the case in a few money exploiters). In fact i'm sure someone who discovered a money-exploit would be the first one to opt out of the leader board.
I think there should be some accountability for being the richest or most popular. I don't think Second Life would really benefit from having people be able to accumulate vast resources but remain anonymous at the same time.

I originally agreed that we really don’t need the leader boards, but after reading what Bel said, now I agree that we do need them. They do provide a bit of accountability and I’m sure help keep the honest people honest.
It is interesting to note that the only people I see complaining about them are the ones on them, me included. Bashful, or guilty?? A little of both in my case, not used to being at the top of anything…
Anyhow, my vote is they stay.

I also argee with Bel. (Not that it will affect my low scorin' ass) I see there are social benefits to knowing the members who hold leadership positions. Also the ability to police/deter would be exploiters is welcome.

I've noticed that I am on the leaderboards myself, but only after clicking on the Leaders tab out of curiosity. My first thought was, "Okay... that's nice. Where's my note sheet for my event?"
Maybe there could be a compromise on this... if you don't want to be shown to the general populace of SL, you could set a "show as anonymous" tab... but the Lindens would still have the full list for accountability reasons and to prevent any inproprieties by players.
Ideas? Suggestions? Lynch mobs?
Bye bye for now, Alexis

my thoughts

I would love that idea, I have gotten a total of three people who just begged and begged for money ( I am like number 6 on leader board) One actualy sounded not so annoying, but I took the time, messaged others that were above me on it and two confirmed they were also being bothered. I find it VERY obnxious. I of course ignored them, I offered one of them, a newbie to come to my place and if they would work for me, I would pay them. One actualy told me that when he asked a linden the linden said to ASK the people that were "wealthy" that kinda ticked me off , Im sorry but very few people in SL just GIVE money away this person got the idea that, the people high up just did that sort of thing since the linden told him.
I realize theres an ignore button. These people werent annoying to the fact where I needed to use it however

I was in the presence of a Linden (dont recall which but it was a male Linden) who I overheard advising a noob who asked "how do I make money" to "ask someone on the leaderboards" meaning "ask someone HOW they made money" rather than "ask them FOR money". But then some people dont listen well and some people have a language barrier SO I can see how it was misinterpreted.
I was surprised they didnt just tell them but it may have been a Linden that had other things going on.
Either way, maybe there should be some other advice being giving since there are people who just arent getting it.

From: someone Original Post By Misnomer Jones I was surprised they didnt just tell them but it may have been a Linden that had other things going on. As a Mentor, I frequently stop by the welcome area to see if there is a large number of new people that may need help, or if there is no Linden available at the time. I have noticed that some of the Lindens, namely the “higher” up ones, are trying to get current residents involved more in answering common questions that are being asked by every new person that shows up. Obviously with more and more new people and a given number of Lindens, they will need help. It should be made obvious to the new folks that we, as residents, do not have the “official” answers and are not Liaisons, but are only using our experience in World so more cases like this do not happen. -TK
