No offense to Zeppi or IGE, but i think it would be a Good Thing if the Lindens offered the *exact same service*, ie a player-to-player currency exchange. More people would use it (as it would be "official";), the Lindens could make a small profit off of it via commissions, and it would add more to the world.

BUT.

i do NOT endorse introducing money INTO the economy this way, ala there. That would lead to so much inflation as to make life silly.

Yep, that's what you do on GOM or IGE.

this sort of exists already..

check out your land in your account, and theres an option where you can choose to pay for monthly land tier charges with L$ instead of US$; HOWEVER, i quickly dismissed it as a good idea due to the fact that i don't bring in that kind of L$ to cover my holdings.. but if you have a knack for making tons of L$, then this option may be groovy for you.

I think you missed some of the point because you can "trade" currency with another player, ex. making a currency exchange inside SL would actuly make money for both the owner and lindenlabs. ( they would get a commision) Witch could be quite helpful to some players.

True, but the problem is the land fees/to linden conversion rate is insanely inflated. something like 15,000/month for a 5 dollar land use fee or something.

With an open market, prices would be dynamic, so everyone would get the "best" price, while the lindens make a commish off each sales, keeping them afloat :)

Why should the Lindens provide a service that other companies are already providing?

So they can make money, obviously.

Why should Ford make cars when there are other companies already making them?

People would use the "official" exchange more readily than a potentially untrusted third party who, for all we know, might be swindling our bank accounts.

I agree. If a currency exchange is a necessary evil I would prefer it to be run by the devil I know. Sorry for comparing you to devils, Lindens. You're very nice devils.

Nah... The Lindens don't need to mess in that. Zeppi is doing a fine job! Lets leave it at that!

Yeah, but they'd probabaly need to rethink their user agreement. As mentioned on another recent thread, Linden basically assumes no liability for L$. Selling L$ for US$... well, that would be sort of a sticky issue, legally. Of course, IANAL...
