We really should have a "buy and sell" forum for advertising stores and services, soliciting help, that sort of thing. And one for building, maybe even one for texturing. Lindens? And an "angry flamewar" forum, that would be useful. Of course, it would decrease the number of posts in General Discussion by several orders of magnitude, but that might be a good idea anyway.

I've seen a few experiments in which organizations try and make 'flame here' forums, and they end up just escalating out of control and bleeding into the other forums.
Buy and sell forums would be GREAT though.

It would be nice to have those types of forums in the official forums here.
All of what you said is pretty much already on the SLUniverse.com forums. But official ones would be nice too since of course they'd get more attention and use.
I don't know about a flaming forum though... that could just get out of hand and really wouldn't exist other than to cause more ill-will between people than already exists.

We already HAVE a flaming forum; it's called "General Discussion". What the forums REALLY need is a flagging system: if you read a thread, you can flag it as being in the wrong forum, and suggest the proper one. This functionality would be simple to implement and would make the forums a lot less annoying. Yes, the downside would be that you'd get a handful of know-it-alls flagging every single thread while actually believing they were helping, but that's where the renowned Linden patience and ability to ignore irritating users comes in handy! Actually, it occurs to me that what would be REALLY cool would be a forum visualization system with a proper tree structure rather than the flat message system, AND threads independent of each forum, so that posts could diverge and be listed as off-topic or not relevant to the immediate discussion, but still remain part of the thread -- only their background colour might change, for example... and anonymous user-moderation... "this post was rated: OFF-TOPIC". Do you agree with this user?" and then based on accumulated data, your client would see threads according to the relevance by which you and other people assigned them. So see right there where I just got completely off-topic and started rambling about some combination of Slash and Usenet? Yeah, that would be a case where some kind of moderation would come in handy.

I dont really play it anymore, in the sense that I'm not getting involved with any projects or anything requiring frequent SL attendance, but I'm not exactly gone either, I pop in once in a while, say hello to some of my friends, fly over the new sims, etc. But I dont spend an awful lot of time logged in, or even log in every day. I used to quite literally spend my every waking hour inside SL. It wasn't pretty.
