Rounded corners on prims

Sometimes you don't want an elliptoid, you want something more or less squarish, but with rounded corners. Yes, you can do it manually using a bunch of prims, but an option to round off the corners (on an object that has corners) would be nice, and shouldn't be too torturous to implement. It would be nice to be able to select the scale of the rounding.

Sure would make my futon look better, anyway. ;)

I'd like some sort of hot bevel action myself... I once saw Francis Chung make Saedaku knife-boxes with rounded corners, and OH MY were they pretty, but they were like 70+ prims more than the non-rounded versions. Meh. :\ I can see many uses for this, especially in this era of design involving rounded-curvosity. :)

YESH.
I endorse this product. It would cut down on prim use, allowing me to make better looking vehicles.

Heh. I would kill for a subdivision algorithm available in-world. Unfortunately, the Lindens would need to find a solution to this, if implemented, so people could not abuse the algorithm to create objects with obscene numbers of faces (causing lag).

I would love to see this implemented.

Rounded corners all the way! Maybe there could be a box to round the corners on all prim shapes like the way we use cut now. Rather than implementing new prim shapes.

As to "a way to do that," see the link I posted above. That algorithm (a staple in 3D model design) would do exactly that, and only require the number of subdivisions to be beamed to the client by prim.

However, the drawback is it exponentially raises the number of polygons to render, so the Lindens would have to cap it at... one - two layers of subdivision? And only have it render when an avatar is nearby.

As a new player, I notice the lack of rounded corners really hurts the SL world's appearence, rendering it more cartoony than necessary, and limiting styles of furniture, etc., to modern/contemporary virtually by default.

I've seen one lazy-boy type chair whose texture apparently gave the appearance of soft roundedness, and very convincingly, too.

As a potential creator of items (I've made only 3 so far), I'm glad to have my suspicion that roundedness can scarcely be achieved confirmed by reading this thread. I've run around in the world looking at anything that appears soft (and isn't clothes) and trying to analyze why. I'd like to make drapes. I'd like to make beds that actually look comfortable. (And I've been trying to analyze the most comfortable ones I've found, and to figure out how what drapes I've found have been made.)

The comments here lead me to think that they could implement a way to round corners without too much programming effort. I think the visual results in the game overall would be a subtle but massive change and well worth it.

Proposals had been made, but none linked back to a forum thread as requested, so I entered a new one with more description and pointed back to this thread. Here's the voting link.

Prims with bevelled edges? ......yes please!
