If anyone can find the Feature Suggestions forumes anymore (Surprised its not named "If you like something in SL but want it changed, or if you want to do a new idea or feature, click here to post it!" yet.), PLEASE change back the names of the forums, these new ones just make it rediculously hard to find things quick, I have to look and actualy READ a WHOLE SENTANCE to find a main thread.

I don't really like how feature suggestions were moved either, but I can live with that...

I can't live with the name change though, change it back please, the straightforwardness of the names made it all quick, easy, and painless.

Edit: And why can't I access Feature Feedback? :P

Can't change it back. We need an entire forum for our resident Nazis and good-doers to duke it out without leaving too much bloodshed in the Events forum.

Yes, the forum names are horrible. Expanded categories is fine (yay building, yay clothing), but names like "Parties, contests, blah blah blah" instead of "Events" is just silly. I know someone was trying to be cute, but come on, usability?

I liked boring, understandable, to the point forum topics.

I'm not saying to get rid of any new forums, I think most of them are needed additions, just saying to go with simple and easy to understand names for them. :P

never improve code at the expense of making the interface more confusing than it already is.

we teach this in every programming, database, and web design course. our students hear it over and over again.

they were responding to our input. they just didn't have enough of it. what confuses me is that they could've. robin recently published a poll about islands. we answered the poll, they did it that way, everbody's happy.

why was that easy, successful model not used for this?

I agree. Some of these forum names are just a bit verbose and redundant.

From: someone
Second Life News Desk

"Announcements" must have seemed too exact a forum topic? We needed something more vague?

From: someone

The Reference Section
The Reference Section > Second Life Release Notes

These two forum are not only unnecessary, they are confusing. The information in them is often out of date. New release notes are rarely posted.

From: someone
Parties, Games, Contests, Soirées, and Assorted Happenings

Wouldn't "Assorted Happenings" cover all the others? The sub-heading for this forum is shorter than the name! Why not put all the examples in the sub-heading?

From: someone
Building Codes and Architectural Visions

While the title is cute, this is confusing for new users. People are going to think there are indeed building *codes* that they have to abide by. Why not just call this "Building and Architecture"?

From: someone
Scripts, Scripting, and the Mysterious World of Code

Redundant and verbose. Try "Scripting Discussion and Resources" or just simply "Scripting"

From: someone
Artists, Designers, and Clothiers

It seems like the intention of this forum is to be the place for texture artists to come, so why is texturing not mentioned? Also "Artists" is a vague topic, as 3d structures can also be discussed here according to the forum name. If the intention of this forum is to discuss making textures, then I suggest a much less ambiguious title, "Texturing and Clothing Design"

From: someone
The World of Second Life
The 'Real' World

General Discussion?
So the Offtopic forum now has a topic?
So where do I post about something which doesn't have anything to do with the 'Real' World nor SL?

From: someone
Rant, Harangue, and Objurgate

Are the forums a thesaurus now?

BTW, why is this negative-topic forum on the top level, but the positive-topic "Feature Suggestions" forum is buried away?

From: someone
Lewd, Rude, or Just Plain Crude

Oh boy. You realize if you fan the flames, they will spread?

Hmm. Maybe I should have posted this in the Rants forum.

as i've stated elsewhere..
04-06-2004 09:16
as have others..

this is indeed a community supported idea.. that is, to reverse this action!

bring back the old names!

as Khamon said, if it's not broken, don't fix it!

the new forums are great for the most part.. keep them all, that's fine.. just ADD them. there was no need to have the entire set of forums re-designed..

PLEASE! Lindens, change the forum names back.. just add the new forums onto the already existing set.. and give the new forums simplistic names like the others had.

this new set up is just sloppy.

i endorse this reversal!

bring back old names, and get rid of nesting
04-06-2004 09:35
I prefer the old names, but I'd also like to see fewer nested topics. I don't want to have to click on every forum link to find a forum now deemed not important enough for the main page. I'd rather all the forums were linked from the front page, even if that makes it larger.

The new forum names sound like someone tried to hard to make them friendly. It's like ATMs that say "sure" and "no thanks" instead of "yes" and "no".

<bump>

I like them there ideas, forum names are the second wave of the future, history is passed but together we can bring them back.

seems like useful posts are reduced
04-16-2004 13:11
This is purely subjective but it seems to me that the number of useful posts has dropped since the adoption of stupid topic names and the needless nesting of topics.

I think making non-cutesy topice names and descriptions and not nesting topics needlessly is important enough that each one who wants to find useful information in these forums should add another post every day until the Lindens notice and react.

I don't see how they could have changed all that on the front forum page and "STILL" leave out a link to the search page.

haha..I thought it was just me! I agree simple is better. And BTW, I almost didn't even see the feature suggestions forum down here at the bottom!

And good point, Leonn. Why is the search page hidden?

I guess "the real world" is off topic forum? I had a post that was off topic so I put it there. It was really off topic, but I was hesitant to post in the way off topic one because thats a "mature" thread and my topic wasnt of that nature.

Its like a crap shoot guessing where to post. Ive seen plenty of posts that start out, "I guess this is where this goes, sorry if Im wrong."

Its been a couple of weeks and all the topic titles are still confusing to me. Please go with simple straight forward topic names. Some of the threads themselves are hard enough to sort through, quit making us guess where to post.

Please make it easy. Please.

And, add an advertising thread. Many people have things for sale and its never clear where to announce these things. As it is, people feel they are infringing on a topic if they post about something they have for sale. Its hard to get the word out, we need a place that encourages posting of goods and services that are available.

This was an old suggestion that sort of died, we really need a place to announce the unveiling of goods and services in world.

I agree that the forum topic names are frivolous and obscure, but what is this about "nested" topics? I can see all the forum topics from the front page, as far as I know (and I think I've checked). They are grouped into categories, but that's normal and doesn't affect anything else, that I can see.

<EDIT> Oh, curses, now I see --> In the menu there are more forums and the few that have sub-forums appear when you go into them. Wow, that is really terrible at first. I always found the menu in vB to be annoying and redundant, but maybe others like it. </EDIT>

The reason, I think, that things were changed is that there were some overloaded forums and others with nothing in them.

I do agree that user consulation should have been done. Who are the forums for except us?

Perhaps a Third Party Message Board
04-22-2004 05:53
There's nothing especially wonderful about the features of this forum. Perhaps a non-Linden site could be more useful and arranged in a rational manner without stupid, confusing, cutesy descriptions?
