I don't know how feasible this would be, but does anybody else think it would be neat to be able to have audio or video chats from the in game IM system?

Yes this would be cool. Audio chat/Voice chat is being worked on.

I was trying to think of a good way to sum up why we don't have it now, but figured it'd be best just to copy and paste from the Town Hall With Cory Linden:
From: someone

Haney Linden: James Miller: Question: What are your plans for voice chat? Like, how will it be implemented, when, etc.

Cory Linden: James: we will not implement voice chat until we can mask voices in a way that doesn't sounds like poop
Cory Linden: we are working with some smart folks on that problem and will hopefully have progress sometime later this year

James Miller: Oh, wow, that's interesting....why?
James Miller: You really feel there is a need for us to mask our voices?

Cory Linden: james: http://www.gamegirladvance.com/arch..._you_fools.html

Haney Linden: cua Curie: in reference to the page you just linked to james regarding voice chat, does Linden Lab feel that second life should be more an immersive game the a communications tool? cua Curie: then a communications tool*

Cory Linden: cua: I'm not completely endorsing Richard's position, but I think that he has a point about the dissonance of hearing a male voice come from female avs, especially if the user doesn't want to give up his or her identity

Hopefully that will shed some light on it. Personaly I'm kind of happy to see LL thinking about things like that, it shows that they really do pay attention.

As for video, I haven't heard anything about this, but yes it would be indeed awsome.

And it would be especialy awsome to have the ability to do them both privatly in IM's.

I of course endorse this idea/feature. :)
