i would like terrain to be 10m x 10m cells each cell could hold seperate textures and elevations.

could use path / road textures on terrain then and reduce prim usage dramatically.

Bear in mind that land is subdivided in 4 x 4 m boundaries, so that might clash with your proposal. Each sim's terrain file holds 64 x 64 entries, one entry for each 4 x 4 M cell.

10 x 10 was just an idea smaller would be okay, bigger and textures would stretch too much :)

Can't this already be done on private islands?

as far as im aware only terrain texture choices islands have are 4 textures which are selected by their height ( elevation ) which is really limiting

yes Altic is correct, you can adjust the heights based on the four corners, which can allow you a small amount of variation of the terrain texture from corner to corner, but it's very limiting.

One thing that may interest you is what Gearsawe Stonecutter's done here with the new sculpted prims on the beta grid (Go and try them out, the more people who do the better!). This would allow you to create 10 x 10m chunks of terrain and give each a different texture.

The disadvantage with these is that they do not support accurate collisions yet, however you could get around this by making them phantom and having them placed a small ways above the ground itself so it appears textured, but collides correctly.
