How about a message that says when other people are typing in IM conversations?

As long as we can turn it off. Often I am IM'ing people and I really don't want everyone else to know this (such as business negotiations.)

IM is the same as private message

I wouldnt like people to know when I am IMing, just cuz I think its private matter. I DO think its important to be attentive to the people around me - (must be why I am the only one I know that doesn't want a cell ) so if I IM while talking to others in publicl - I am usually extra attentive. .:Matina:.

ermmm... I think I should rephraze that.
I meant a message to the person you're IMming to show wheather you're typing or not. This is only for person to person IMs, not group IMs

I like the idea, it's a little hard to tell sometimes if an IM conversation is over.
The typing motion and noise is a great feature of "normal" chat, and if a little blinking indicator next to someone's name can add that to IM's, it would be wonderful. Even if they're name simply highlighted when there was any text on their input line (which I assume would only require one indicator from their client to the server, and one down to your client), it would tell you that more was likely coming.
That said, it would also be nice if, like AFK, there were an over-the-head "IM" indicator that we could intentionally display when we know we're going to be conferencing. It's tough to know sometimes if a person you're chatting to is listening and thinking, linkdead (but not showing it yet), away from keyboard or actually unconscious, or in an IM coma.

Sometimes I don't like people to know I'm having an IM conversation though...
Also maybe it should tell you if you IM someone while they're afk, as it does when they're busy?

I'd often thought it would be nice to have your normal busy signal up.. but have a type of filtration to it. Example: Water Rogers (Busy) --however i would like to be able to talk with Darwin only Busy Filter Screen Filtered People Darwin Appleby In this scenario, I am lets say working on a project with Darwin, and would not like to be bothered by other people at the moment (not to say bothered in a negative way It could even be a right-click option on calling cards... just like selecting Modify Permissions. Just a thought --Water
