Maybe this has been discussed in another thread, sorry for the redundancy, but.. I'm brand new to the SL world... I like the avatar paradigm, and I like being able to see other people's avatars, but I'd probably shave a good bit of process off my CPU if I could just work in mouselook mode. (create/edit, that is)... This then works more like regular modeling programs and lets me navigate more intuitively.. as it stands now, I'm finding myself focusing on an object, accidentally hit an arrow key and I lose my focus because the camera recenters on my avatar. Otherwise, I'm completely amazed at the level of flexibility of the tools. Awesome! I'm on a mac, btw.

unfortunatly that's how it works. i don't build, i don't do anything, in mouse view. i use these combos:
alt-left/right arrow to rotate my view around an object
alt-up/down to zoom into or away from an object
alt-pageup/pagedown to pan above or below an object
about every fifth time i forget to hold the alt key. not only does my view reset, my avatar moves AND i lose the edit connection. it's extremely cumbersome and tedious. but that's how it works.

You can just alt-click too. Alt-ctrl-click and alt-shift-click work as well.
But as for the rest, if you're overloaded, you may want to lower draw distance in prefs. Happy building!
