I would very much like to be able to cut a torus and then taper one or the other end of the cut to a point. If you picture a cut torus as a bent cylinder it would be like changing the top size of the cyclinder to make it more conical, only with the option of doing it to one or both ends of the cylinder instead of just one.

It wouldn't look the same. A cone would create either a very sudden narrowing or a discontinuity in the curve of the torus.

Julian, I think you'll get closer to what you want with a dimpled/cut sphere than with a torus...cut spheres tend to have more of a taper, but probably not quite in the direction you want it to be in for this.

Well, complex shapes like that are hard to do in SL. I would like some more prims myself, but I beieve that LL is sort of limited by the underlying system which has its own primitive shapes, and the way LL streams data to us is to send a single number stating the type of prim it is to render. I suppose they could throw in some mesh and call it a new prim, but then it wouldnt be easy to adjust its parameters. It would probably have to end up as a castrated excuse for a prim, like trees, which cant be scripted, turned physical, deformed etc. I heard there used to be a spiral prim though. It would definitely come in handy, since spirals have been important architectural elements throughout history.

Thanks, Lumiere, but the sphere trick has edges rather than being a tapered tube.
They're limited in the types of prims and the allowed manipulation because of the featues of OpenGL, aren't they? Did I hear wrong?
