All i want is a good 3d model importer that would handel .max/.3ds/.obj files correctly. It would be able to model the entire model correctly, sculpted meshs and all. It would also be able to load the correct textures. I dont model with second life and i have remaking something i already have created.

It would be somewhat doable, but tough, because you can create such complicated shapes in professional modelers. The sculpties solution is one way to go. Someone has already created a tool to convert floor plan drawings into prims in SL. The Lego tool that converts any 3D object into a volume filled by legos is another possibility. I agree that there are better ways to make things than the current tools, but I'm not convinced that Maya or 3DS Max or Blender are the best way to do SL-oriented modeling.

if someone is skilled enough to make a complex shape in maya or max, they should be skilled enough to uvw wrap the texture and texture it, i think the importer would be a great idea

....in other words, an ACAD plugin that tells ACAD what a prim is, then normal SL building, but in ACAD, then a bunch of imported text files and a prim-dupe script that runs off the data files instead of existing prims.

You still need to know how to build using the SL tools and build inside the land prim limit.

Also: that was easily the most boring video I have ever watched. 20 seconds of intro, should have been 3 to 5. Then a bunch of SL capture that could have been cut down as "this is the data file" ok...and? I can't read any of it. I'm sure it'd have been more interesting if the text was readable, ok, a HUD with...buttons...that....do.........things. Great. Get over it and move on.

What about learning to work with the available tools ?

Open Source software is an available tool.

Hacking the client can't make you better tools.

And, that would be like where man never evolved from the use of a blunt, jagged blades made from broken stones to a very fine crafty sword. That never happened.

lets see it the other way, who refuse to "evolve" between one that learn the sl building tools and one asking for an importer for a tool he know already?

Actually, that's called "using the available tools." :)
There were a lot of steps between stone blades and bronze (and then another to iron and then steel).

The SL building tools as the exist CAN NOT evolve without changes to the server (unless you know a way to integrate sculpie creation into the client, in which case, by all means go ahead). Learn to use the current tools and you might "evolve" your thinking.

...so, in essence, evolve and the use of available tools is very similar. Dang philiospohillie this got! lol

Yes, I posted source for an in-world OBJ to sculpt map importer. It uses the available tools. =)

Ah ha. See, I don't browse the building forums.
I also tend not to follow Jira links because Jira's fubared when it comes to logging in. If you hadn't said there was source and binary attached to the proposal I'd never have seen it.
