Kind reminder: llSetMaterial(MATERIAL_TYPE); please? Lights can be actually turned off so we don't have to cover them with a blanket (color) anymore and are not charged light tax for leaving the lights on all day long ;) Companion llGetMaterial(); may be handy at times as well.

There may be a workaround. There are some interesting experiments going on in Blue on auto-rezzing entire buildings upon the approach of an avatar. It seems like this could be easily applied to a mere light.

I am not sure if the purpose of the experiment is sheer coolness or prim conservation; unfortuntately I do not remember the folks involved.

However a light that turns on/material only when soneone is near enough to matter seems eminently resaonable, much in the same way that LL doesn't send me that which I am not looking at. Hope that helps.

Heh, if you're into auto-rezzing experiments you should talk to Xylor Baysklef. The guy can automatically build just about any shape of any size with his scripts. The effect is visually stunning.

While it's possible to rez lights when needed, its a bit of a hack and it's cumbersome. I'd rather have a simple llSetMaterial().

Or, they could simply remove the light tax or lower it dramatically, as it is no longer the performance issue it once was. Set Material would be nice however too - especially if other materials finally have some useful properties associated with them (besides glass making a little tink sound when you walk on it).

Are permissions still all wierd with auto-rezzing though?

Nah, permissions are totally fucked up, though now that we dont have a modify permission anymore, it seems logical that its not turned on by default like before. Which sucks because when someone shoots a cage gun at me I cant Take it like I used to.
