The preferences dialog currently has the Enter key closing the preferences dialog. I'd much rather have it send the updated value and leave the dialog open so that you can make the next change. (I think this is how it used to work.)

I've never liked used the Enter key as a Commit or Take Action key, it is a shame that computer keyboards are still so typewriterish. I barely remember old terminals having separate Return keys, for advancing to the next line, and an Enter or Commit key or some such that meant take an action and proceed to the next step.

I'd use the Tab key in some cases but the tab key now tend to cause unwanted flashing.

Is, the enter key is supposed to do whatever button is highlighted. I suspect that if you "fix" this, you'll have even more people complaining about the new behavior.

Good for you if you can find a solution that suits all here.

Cheers

Interesting. I suppose my goal could be acheived if the default button was Apply instead of Ok, or that none of the three Ok, Cancel, and Apply buttons would be highlighted.

Or, when a text entry field is highlighted, with the keyboard focus in the text entry field, the return key would accept the typed value and remove the highlight from the text entry field, returning the highlight to the default action button, which is currently the Ok button.

Hmm, setting which of the three buttons is highlighed might be yet another thing one can change if they are able to remember how to and willing and able to edit xml files every two weeks.

Okay, I've just made a start on fixing this nasty issue. I've just ordered C++ for Dummies from Amazon.
