MIDIs are always much smaller than real digital sound, and a decent MIDI on a modern sound card can sound pretty much like the real thing... why not throw in MIDI upload and playback support?

Ugh, no. please no.
Activeworlds had this "feature", and it quickly turned into a train wreck.
Sure, GOOD midi files can sound decent, but 80% of midi files are composed by musical morons like me... and i really don't want to hear them blaring next door, or next to the "beloved Miss Frisky the Kitten Memorial" or whatever.

Oh please please please let's have the MIDI option I'd love it love it love it *whinewhinewhine*!!!
Perhaps everyone could have a "MIDI ON/OFF" option in case they don't like the MIDI that is playing. Not sure how difficult that is, buuut--
Oh please please please MIDIMIDIMIDI..

It's called the volume slider =) if you double click on the standard windows volume slider on the system tray (lower left corner, little yellow speaker icon), a more complex one will appear where you may set the volume of MIDI, CD Audio, etc, independently, or or turn them off altogether.

It would be cool to have this feature but I'm going to have to say no.., well more like hell no. I agree with Lordly, most of the time MIDI files are crap tones. They annoy me when they pop up on websites and even more now that everyone and their mom's have a MIDI ringtone on their cell phone.

Hah, you wealthy american you, around here I still carry a big old monochrome nokia... heck, ive just UPGRADED to a nokia... I used to have a crappy siemens with a font that reminded me of ye olde spectrum. How about MODs, S3M or XM files? IT files? That sorta stuff... I've got like thousands of them. I remember when my 486 wasnt powerful enough to play some XM files... lol. Then again MP3s raised the CPU meter to 100% as well back in the day.

Oh yes, .xm, .mod, .it's would be great! I have done a lot of music myself using Fastracker2 or IT and most of those files are relatively small depending on the size of the samples.
