Texture overlays

Ok. I just started building my tower a few days ago, spent a while finally getting the first and third floors done, in a nice, mathematically correct octagonal shape, and then I go to put my texture on it...

And the edges squoosh my textures. Apparently sheared or top-sized prims don't like textures very much.

Can a workaround to this problem be found, such as being able to say 'This texture merely needs to be placed over the object in exactly the same shape it is now' rather than 'follow the shape of the polygons?

Yeah, I know, it'll be complex. But please? I can't finish building otherwise, or I have to rebuild my floors using several more prims.

yes additional projection types would be fantastic, such as planar, cylindrical, spherical or uv, that would be very nice.

A real overlay texture would be nice as well great for lightmapping should people want to do that instead of baking it in the textures and having a zillion textures.

You're experiencing a quirk of how UV-mapping of quadralaterals works. You can work around this, by figuring out how the surface deforms the texture (a grid texture works wonders here) and applying the inverse of that deformation to your texture in a paint program.

would u like to please explain this. I thought I was ok with paint programs, i use PhotoImpact, Paint Shop Pro, (and Photoshop on a friends machine). And I have tried doing this before, eg for shirts but can't figure out how to do this correctly.

If you (or anyone) would like to explain how to do this I would be VERY appreciative...:D :D :D
