Instant Messenging

We can already see the list of people that we have calling cards for on this website which leads me to believe that this information is in some format that is at least translatable outside of Second Life.

It would be cool if there was an instant messenger client that members could use that would allow us to IM each other even if we were not in SL. Jabber comes to mind as it allows you to write a client in a universal format that connects to a server that translates it into another format that the other client can understand.

If Jabber was used you could use a normal Jabber client and would need a translater on the server that would take input and enter it into the Second Life enviroment. The other direction would also need to work.

I work a normal job, but it is an internet job and I think it would be cool if I could talk to second lifers even when I wasnt able to connect.

Also, I plan to get a phone/handheld computer soon that can be online whenever I wish. Which has lots and lots of possiblities......

Just a thought.

No I am not associated with Jabber, just think its cool technology (http://www.jabber.org) and its free.

I second that! It would be great. EverQuest has a client that allows you to speak to any character that is online from outside the game. Way cool. Lindens, please?

Was going to add this, but found it already here. I'll third this, and also second the use of Jabber. In fact it would make a lot of sense for SL to have its own Jabber server just for SL people, so no IP issues with anybody. There are clients for both Windows and Linux (even OS X I think) that already support the Jabber protocol as well as allowing you to monitor AOL, ICQ, Yahoo, (and maybe MSN) "buddies" lists at the same time. Trillian is the well known all-in-one client for Windows, but there is also GAIM which works fine for Linux (as well as Windows).

Even once the Linux version of SL comes out and I flush my Windows CDs down the toilet (metaphorically speaking) there will still be times that it would be nice to be doing something else but still connected somehow. Also I'd much rather get my SL IMs via an external IM client than by e-mail. Am I rambling yet?
