Put a copy of the newbie island on the mainland!

There are too many times I see someone new who says, "oh, I was on that island and clicked off it on the map... how do I get back?"

Before the WWIIOLers showed up last year, Jessie was a copy of the Prelude sims, which was useful for newbies (and oldbies) who hadn't completed orientation.

I didn't know you could drag physical objects UP until a couple months ago! I'd never seen anyone do it before, and I've been here 16 months! Sure enough, that's something you learn how to do on the newbie island.

(Now, in my defense, I predate most of the documentation on how to use the SL controls, so... :))

Putting a copy of the newbie island on the mainland would be unlikely to bankrupt Linden Lab, and would provide an additional help resource that's sorely needed.

Here, here... Or at the very least, disable teleport from the player's map until they leave the island by the scripted means. It's too easy to double click something there and teleport away. (Or so new users who missed the instructive tour tell me.)

I'd suggest adding some mechanism to allow newbies to return to the orientation island within a certain time-frame, say, the first week of their being in SL? However, that would obviously require more effort to set up than just copying the data files to a new server and sticking it on the map, and would only benefit newbies.

(As some of you may have noticed, I like to think of everything in the Feature Suggestions forum in cost-benefit terms. Is the developers' time worth the resulting feature or improvement?)

I think it would be cool to be able to go to a copy and go over things. I would be looking at things in a different light now and may see something I had missed my first hectic-stary-eyed night.

Just take out the money part of the scripts of the copy and leave everything else the same. :)

Plum is the perfect place for it. Not much at all goes on in this unused welcome area. Convert it to a Prelude Island Training grounds.

I'm slowly making a building tutorial in Noyo (180, 180 ish) for this very purpose. It's called the Ivory Tower Library of Primitives. It covers almost all the basics and then some as it now stands. I have a lot of plans to expand on this over the coming months, so if you meet newbies and no building classes are available and they want to find an inworld resource on this, please send them my way.

If you've been here a while, and find that there are details you've never quite understood to do with the building interface or with building practices, please come by. You'll find complete, visual mock-ups of all aspects of the building interface and building controls.

I'd really appreciate any feedback I can get on how to make this a better and more complete resource. Being the weirdo I am I never went to building classes until I found two or three details in the interface that I didn't understand and wanted to know more about. I was amazed at how many useful little details I picked up.

I've been much more amazed with all that I've learned since I've started this project and all the superb tips I've been given to include in the tutorial from master builders. My gosh I have so many more people to interview!

Thanks,

Lumi
