How about an option that would allow mainland landowners to sell 512 sq.m. parcels to be sold as First Land?

What would motivate someone to do this? Philanthropy?

Back in the old days folks set 512 parcels for sale for 512 quite frequently. (Or was it for just one linden for the 512?) A way of being nice to a new user, or showing some community spirit.
Few would do that now as a way to give a new user a break because the land would be purchased by a bot running shortlived new accounts or a continuous land search clicker for resale or a n00b who's only interest in getting the land was to turn a profit rather than to use it to get involved in SL.
Might be philanthropy, might be a way to make a reputation, might be a way to establish a relationship with a potential customer. Who knows why people do the things they do?
It would be a way to provide starter parcels for new users without the Linden staff having to parcel up sims.

Sounds like a great idea.
I'm not sure how complex the code for Linden's 'First Land' is but they could code a 3rd option on whom you want to sell the land to.
Then you'd have "Anyone", "<Select User>" and then "First Land".
But the question remains, after the the parcel is sold under as 'First Land', to whom would the money go to, Linden or the seller?

It's not something i personally see myself using in the near future (I'm not nearly rich enough to justify me doing this), but I defintieley think it is a great idea to implement. I can mainly see people who want to tier down doing it.

I think it's a great idea and if they release another large batch of auctions today, it may not be long before people start selling for that again

If they are going to do this, then they had best implement a _software_ update with it that prohibits the words "first land" to be used in any land advertisement where the price is higher than 512 lindens.
Otherwise there will be dishonest sellers who will put it up for 2000, and unaware newbies will be tricked into spending 4 times as much as they should. You KNOW some will try to get away with it if it's not made impossible by software restraints.
Otherwise, I think it's a totally grand idea!

True, but I think this "sell as first land" option would set FLAG_FIRST_LAND = true and show up in the "search for only first land" land type in the search.

If implemented properly, I'd imagine this could be quite successful Imagine having an additional rating in your profile for how many homeless new players you helped

When you sell all your land and then try to buy a new parcel (not Fist land), you're told something like "You've never bought land before. Better look for the cheaper First Land". So obviously it is possible to buy infinite amounts of FL. Simply buy it, give it to a friend (sell it at L$1) and buy the next parcel right away. No wonder that there is NEVER FL land available to those it is meant for.
This is relly a very nice idea, but the only thing it would do is to feed the sharks. Land brokers I mean.
I can in no way understand, why LL obviously is not able to set a shitty tiny little flag on an account that it actually HAS bought First Land and can not buy any more.

Ecept, um, LL has set that flag. That helpful message suggesting you look for FirstLand instead is tripped when you currently have no land. But the check for whether you have bought FirstLand before is tripped when you attempt to buy some a second time. It results in an anomalous helpful hint, but it still prevents you repeatedly buying FirstLand with the same account. Contrary to popular belief, LL is not completely stupid.

> But the check for whether you have bought FirstLand before > is tripped when you attempt to buy some a second time. I tried to verify this, but there is... very little opportunity to do so. Were you able to verify this or do you just assume it? > Contrary to popular belief, LL is not completely stupid. They wouldn't have got that far if they were. Just a little overstrained it seems, sometimes

They wouldn't have got that far if they were. Just a little overstrained it seems, sometimes I actually verified this personally a month or two ago when I found some first land. At that time I had already sold my original first land parcel.

First land, first land. I really need some so I can have my privacy.
Linden, I made a small promise to you a few days ago, if you would give me First Land. If you do not think I can whispher my sweet words in your ear and bring you to your knees, show yourself to me and I will prove you wrong.
Now Linden, please I need First Land. Do you not see how desperate I am. I am not a seductress, but for First Land I will try anything once. Come on Dan, come to me, I need First Land.

Nothing stops anyone from selling land for 512 lindens. And It will rapidly get swoped up by the next bot or land baron who blinks at it. This proposal is for a means to make sure the land can only be resold to someoen who has never owned land before - it's a way to give back to the community instead of the rich guys.
