Right now, the darkest the world gets, in the middle of the night is a kind of twilight. This is good for being able to get around and, you know, do stuff in the world at this time, but it makes it hard to do night-timey atmospheric places.
Could we have an "ambient lighting" setting for land, similar to the "see" distance? Night and day would still exist on this land, it's just that night would be darker.

Wow, Wed. The darkest times really bother me. lol
I find it impossible to build/texture during those times, and difficult even to find where I'm going. But... it would be cool to be able to darken an area during certain events or for certain continuous displays. Could do some neat stuff with that.
While on this subject, could anyone give me some tips on the best way to light up an area when you're working (such as on texturing) during the dark times? I haven't yet found an effective way to do this.
Thanks - Kerstin

Well if Wednesday wants it darker, which I could think of a whole lot of uses for, why not have the option to have it lighter as well?
I've tried setting up a bunch of lights to work at night but it doesn't seem very effective.

It would be really cool to have 'night' events! we used to have real darkness; it was great cause when i was in my demon skin, all you could see was my hair and eyes. But like kerstin says, it makes it difficult to build/texture/anything but script . Kerstin, i have a portable sun in my inventory that i pop out when i need it. it is a 5m sphere, the stock transparent white texture, it is phantomed, and it is a light... it tends to make things bright enough to build, textures are a little harder cause it washes em out pretty quickly if it is anywhere close. edit - for those who do not know, the intensity of the light is solely based on its volume, i.e. the bigger it is the brighter it is.

For a while I did my work inside a 10m*10m*2m hollow cylinder that was a light. I may have also hat a 10*10*1 disk hovering above my head.

yea, what BBC says. also, the release notes for 0.4 mentioned that prefs/Display/Local Lighting has been turned off by default. making a Light object will not light up the area unless you turn that option back on.
