In all of the posts re: Age Verification I have only seen langauge, sex and violence mentioned, but what about gambling?
The legal age for gambling is 18 in Australia and 21 I belive in most of the US. IF LL are serious about protecting the young and unverified, as well as covering their own butts (something I can understand) then I would like to see any location in SL that offers gambling be restricted to Avatars verified as being aged 21 or over, or at least as being listed an Adult Content area.
This would at least protect Linden Labs from sponsoring gambling via their servers while having reasonable grounds to suspect that some players are not of legal age. AAt the moment I would suspect that Linden labs may be in breach of Californian Law.

I think in Seattle, WA it is illegal to smoke within 25 feet of any building that is not a private residence. Perhaps we should implement that law into SL as well. After all, if we're going to enforce one - why not all!

Rusalka, because smoking in SL does not involve your RL lungs, while gambling in SL can easily involve your RL money!

What Casinos?
Id be all for making the "Gaming" venues Adult only though. Gaming apears to be the current Gambling Buzzword that replaces casino.
A lot less people would do it if they knew LL had their identity involved and know its on a shaky legal future in the US.
I really think LL should remove Gaming as allowed for this activity - SINCE - their ban was intended to reduce visibility.
Any FBI type looking for Casinos will think of "gaming" im sure.

Slippery slope into dangerous waters
05-23-2007 13:27
All of this verification and limitation talk is venturing into dangerous waters. If Casinos within SL are treated as their real-life counterparts, it will also become necessary to consider the physical location and nationality of users. Just within the US there are many states where any form of gambling is totally illegal (except for the state's own lottery, of course). Is this really a can of worms you want to open?
SL is a virtual environment. It is NOT real. I think everyone would do well to remember this.

Casinos are adult content, Robin Linden mentioned this in the recent minutes. Explicit sexual content, extreme violence and casinos, or something like that but I'm pretty sure I read casinos will fall into the adult category.
I could be talking rubbish here, I can't find any reference to this. Move along, nothing to see here.

She must have said "Kasino" or maybe "cacino" or maybe "Pacino"

If you read the TOS, the linden has no cash value. The only reason they are selling on the lindex is simple supply and demand pushing an auction market. Similar to selling things in a yardsale, sure they maybe worthless, but someone will pay a quarter for it. So therefore gambling on SL is 100% legal, your gambling with virtual funds worth $0 in any currency.
