Would anybody else like to see some nice sandy beaches in SL? Maybe it's just a reaction to the fact that I haven't seen the real sun for weeks on end, but I've noticed that there are lots of great spaces near the water that have had all the clutter removed from them, and would look wonderful with soft white sand instead of the horrible brown dried earth we have at the moment.

I don't know whether it would be possible for the Lindens to designate areas near the water to have sand instead of earth, or maybe another layer could be added that comes out as sand within a certain distance of sea level, but if it were possible it would be wonderful to have a house with steps down to a secluded private beach.

Now, where did I put that deckchair..?

If I recall correctly, Perry used to be a beach.

i would love a beach. what's the possibility of building a nice smooth sloping beach with a sandy texture and kind of embedding it in the shore so it angles down into the water? i bet you could make it look good.

Excellent suggestion!

Welsh started out as a beach with one side all water. While it still has the beachy feel that I like, it is really a collection of islands that are much smaller than you would likely find in the real world. There is this frightening gap in the map where I am fearful that another SIM will show up one day and make our local geography look pretty silly.

The economy, and the cost of using the bulldozer make it *difficult* to create geographical monsters, but it is not impossible.

It would be nice to have a guarantee of sorts from Linden that certain edges would always be edges.

A related concept would be special SIMs that could not be built on at all. They could be used for permanently underwater areas, deserts, mountains, or even a public "park" with few objects, no physics, ideal for meetings of large groups. There are a few SIMs that mostly meet this latter purpose already, but I'm not sure this is a long term objective for them.

As far as sand goes, I assume at some point builders will be able to select textures for the land they own, if not from their own inventory, at least from a selection of nicely tiled standard ones. The trick of course will be how to blend these variations together so that the place doesn't look like a checkerboard. Maybe a spray paint tool to go along with the bulldozer to allow each square to be unique. That would be pretty much perfect.

Psh. Read. The question is not whether there are beaches in SL, but whether we have the facility to make beaches where we want them.

A better suggestion: the ability to change the texture of the ground underneath your property -- say, to a sand color, or a grassy green, or asphalt dark gray, or stark snow white.

Edit: Mac got to it first, but I didn't see it buried in his post
