Specifically, I want to be able to paint my avatar offline and upload the clothing once rather than spending L$150 trying to get it right.
Some kind of gesture editing would be nice too.

This would be a cool feature as it is very frustrating to have both wasted your Lindens on uploading a texture that is just not right and wasting everyones else bandwidth while you are doing it. Times this by the number of times somebody does this because they are trying to make something really cool and you have a fair amount of waste with the precious server resources we feed upon.

If LL could just revamp the -local flag of newview.exe a bit, maybe we can get this feature. Right now if you define -local in a newview.exe shortcut, your put into a local world, but your client is constantly trying to download your avitar and inventory.
I would suggest local mode with an unlimited amount of money to experiment with. of course, you still wouldnt be able to upload stuff created in local mode to the main grid, which is good, you can simply make a model of what you want to build in local mode, and recreate it while logged into the main grid. _____________________
