I would love to have the option of viewing the world in first person without being in "shoot mode" or mouse mode. Everything would work the same way, but I wouldn't have to look at the back of my head all the time.

It would be so much more comfortable, thanks, Ingie

Yeah, out of body camera experiences are somthing that the Lindens have stated are somthing they're working toward during a Town Hall meeting. So eventually it should come ;)

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but there is no way to be looking "through the eyes" of your avatar..... it's always from behind them, unless you are in mouse mode, no?

Thanks for any info, but if it doesn't exist, I'd sure like it, it's less disorienting for me :p

Oh, BTW, who is that guy beating up on????????? I keep wanting to ask..........but know that I'm outta touch with something I ought to know, :D ...........

As far as I know, that is correct... unless there is some secret key sequence I don't know about.

Back in the (much) earlier version of SL there was a first person mode, in addition to 3rd person, mouselook, and build modes, all of which had different key and mouse properties in addition to the different point of view.

At some point, I guess in an effort to simplify things, they eliminated first person mode, which was for me at least, the most usefull mode. There was not much of an explanation for this choice as I recall, simply that 3rd person was more common in other computer based games. I'm sure that if you have been in 3rd person mode using other games for the past 10 years or so, that this would be the logical choice for you. I'm sure it is more gratifying to watch your avatar blow away the bad guy than to just see the bad guy blown away.

On the other hand, I haven't heard a good explanation for why I would want to be positioned 3 inches away from my scalp when I am standing with my back to a wall, which is often the case if you are in a room having a conversation with others. The interface also has a lot of difficulty keeping the point of view IN the room as you are moving around. So, for me anyway, I see the back of my head, and then a close-up of a brick wall, and then the back of my head again, at which point, not knowing exactly where I am in the room I generally lunge forward into someone else who is also attempting to position themselves. I think for this reason, most get-togethers in SL are held outside.

What I'd like would be very much like what we have now in mouselook mode, except:

Up arrow would move me forward (by flying or walking depending on that mode selection), down Arrow would move me backward.

Left and right arrows would be used to turn to the left or right.

Some modifier key combination (eg: ctrl-up arrow) would be used to "look" up instead of "move" up or forward, and some other combination (eg: shift-up arrow) would be used in flying mode to easily distinguish between flying forward and flying upward.

I can easily learn to live with other key combinations than the ones I'm used to, I just don't want to use the mouse to move around. For me, the mouse is used to point at or click on things, or navigate menus. For avatar movement, I'd rather just use the keyboard, and I'd like my virtual point of view to be where my avatars eyes are, not behind my head.

PS: As far as out-of body camera, other than the normal 3rd person view...

That was also available in an earlier version, although I don't think it got much use. You could move the camera around independently of your avatar, even into other sims I believe. You could be building something in one place an carrying on a conversation in another. I don't think that some of these things were intended as features, they just "happened" as a result of the interface.

I think there was also concern that in this mode you could enter someone house and look around inside even if they had all their doors locked etc. This was definitely counter to the design of the system which was to honor "virtual privacy rights" for lack of a better term. In a way, the current 3rd person view has this flaw too. I can stand outside a building that is locked and maneuver myself so that my 3rd person view is tricked into putting my viewpoint inside the structure. This could thwart certain types of game constructs such as mazes etc.
