i see a possibility for explotation in the new land system, seeing as you can ban users from your land, what would stop someone from buying a HUGE plot of land in tan (that goes accross the sim) and turning it on so only their group can go past it, that would make it impossible to travel from one side to the other (minus teleportation)

Good point but, if you fly up you can pass over that plot. There is a max height for that restrict access.

I think the land restrictions will only apply to a height of 20m above the ground level. I currently like to fly low to the ground, afraid those days will be gone.
It will be interesting to see who keeps restrictions on their land all the time. I hope SL does not lose its friendly, welcome feel. I hope that land restrictions are only enabled when its necessary, like for group meetings or events requiring a cover charge. We shall see...
