In-game* HTML display?

I've gotten plenty of notes in game, but they're all plain text. I think a dumbed down version of HTML could be supported, allowing those who know it to make prettier web-page like newspapers, signs, etc in game.

Perhaps allow links to other in game objects and graphics only (By putting a texture into the object contents, then referencing it using normal HTML style?)

Any thoughts on this?

*(The term "game" used loosely)

i would *love* to have text signs/instructions in game. it would be alot easier on the bandwidth than textures. great idea Ryozu.

Having rudimentary HTML (or HTML-esque) support for not only business cards and notes, but also actual objects, that'd be cool. You could render the HTML as an image on the client, so the rendering engine wouldn't even know the difference. All you'd need is a markup interpreter and a means of attaching said markup to an object.

All you'd need would be basic colours, a couple font sizes, maybe 4 or 5 different fonts... it wouldn't necessarily have to be HTML-based, just use something similar. It definitely wouldn't need to be a full-fledged HTML rendering engine, that's for sure. :-) (It'd be a cool hack, but HTML isn't what we want if we're doing page-layout stuff, and this is close enough.

I just like the idea of being able to hand someone a business card or flyer or something and having that same information entered into their personal database at the same time. It strengthens the metaphor and allows for greater suspension of disbelief. We all know SL isn't real, but we're used to things behaving in a certain way. Being able to interact with each other more effectively is good, since it starts using the environment less as a gimmick for a chat client and more as a practical application in its own right.

Off I go on a tangent... :-)

Count me in as thinking this is a great idea - actually, TWO great ideas, since one deals with notes you read, and the other deals with on-screen objects.

Even if the in-game HTML would be too complex to implement right now, allowing basic HTML to be placed in notes would be awesome!

This kind of reminded me...

We're still a long way off from HTML on prims, but the last reply here made me think of something...

We do have an embedded browser in SL now, what do you think of HTML supportin Notecards?

Just give the existing Notecard window two tabs, "View" and "Edit"

No Modify cards wouldn't have an Edit. Tags such as img src="" or a href="" could use UUIDs (replacing existing embedded objects/textures.)

this exact topic has come up many many many times since this post, and from what i can tell its linden labs policy to not include anything usefull like html notecards in its updates, we have spoken, & voted but still good ol plaintext reigns

I just felt like being a smart-aleck and bringing up just how long the want for such a feature has been around ;)

on a sort-of related issue, how come we can't copy/paste from a notice? I get lots of interesting artsy urls in notices but can't c/p them, let alone click them to open a browser window. mildly annoying.
