I have been doing the SL thing for over two years now, viewer after viewer I seem to constantly be fighting for a lag free SL.
It has got a lot better over the years with the latest release being possibly the best I have used to date.
It does however strike me that LL could make a few minor mods and kill a few birds with a single stone on SL. How about you make a cut down viewer, a no frills basic rendering version.
How does this kill the birds?
Second Units: Those of us who travel and have a netbook or laptop. Most of us have a really basic intel graphics card but still want to enjoy SL whilst away from our gaming PC’s.
Basic PC’s: People without a gaming machine and a high end graphics card. Not everyone wants to spend £1000 just to play SL.
Lag Fest: Some days on SL are better than others but sometimes you just want to log in and take a look at something, or just read your IM’s etc. Would be a useful thing to have on a bad lag day when your trying to build.
Just my two cents !

SLim is for IM etc without graphics.
Otherwise, use Preferences and set graphics to lowest settings, and then pick Custom and set Particles to a small number. If that's what you're doing already, there's not much else the viewer could do to reduce frills, without the world looking pretty seriously wrong.

Sure there is, we got along just FINE before the damn' Windlight and Voice garbage became soooo imPORtant to foist on us all! That stuff hogs up a lot of machine memory, and for those of us who don't want or need it... it's carrying a floor safe on our backs foor no good reason. Just more bloat and system usage. I'd love to see a new release that has Windlight and Voice stripped off!

You can try some of the 3rd party viewers...Nicholaz, Cool Viewer, etc. I use the Cool Viewer 1.19. It has no Windlight, but otherwise is well updated and works on my old machine really well
