I would really like to be able to set my own personal script that is the standard opening script rather than the one you have.

As a workaround, you can use a macro (doesn't everyone run a macro keyboard/program these days). It's still an extra step but, click new script, hit macro button, get custom "new script".
But ditto to your idea. I can't stand the "C-style" brace formatting, and prefer the "Sun-style", so first thing I used to do was fix those braces and save.

I just hate the fact that a new script added to an object spams chat. If I have to create several new scripts then I end up with "Hello avatar" all over my chat window. So agreed

You don't have to click New Script, you can just drag your own script from your inventory into an object...
