Someone brought this up earlier this week in world. Could we have the option to not receive IM's AT ALL if we are not logged in? Perhaps a message (like the busy mode messages) that can be customized: I am not online at the moment. You can email me at my email address or contact me when I am online. -OR- This person has chosen not to receive IM's when not online. Something we can customize ourselves? The current IM's don't always get to us offline anyway and some that are received offline are not even there when we log in...even if IM's are NOT capped. People will often say they IM'd but the recipient never saw an IM offline ir online. Often, when we mute someone, we get there IM's offline anyway. So how about adding a feature to not receive IM's at ALL? Just a suggestion.

This sounds like a pretty good feature, and it would probably best be implemented in an IM overhaul. I'd love the ability to customize which IMs get sent to me via e-mail (disable group notices, for example). A toggle so that IMs sent via e-mail will not be stored in SL, thus reducing or possibly eliminating the IM cap, would be really useful.
At the very least, your suggestion can sort of become the foundation for future IM improvements. Custom busy messages and features that mainstream IM clients have probably aren't high on the priority list at Linden Labs, but bugs and functionality should be attended to.

I agree.

I'd rather have the option of having all our IM's sent directly to our inbox, regardless of whether we're online or not. I find Instant Message mode too demanding. - "The user has disabled IM mode. Your message has been sent to their inbox." MadamG, I'm guessing from the post you made in Resident Answers, that you're trying to get around being spammed by some griefer that is causing your messages to be capped. I think if we could have all our messages instantly sent to our inbox then capping wouldn't be a problem. But ultimately, I don't think there is a way around your problem. You'll just have to be patient and wait for the asshole to get bored. It's no different to what would happen if some phone stalker were to constantly phone you at work. You wouldn't be able to change your number because it's your business number and needs to be public.

And for those of us who are business owners, it would be nice to some how sort out IM's from those on your friends list and those who aren't. Capped messages are a pain.

Okay, I must be missing something.
If you are being griefed by someone through repeated IMs, can't you just mute them? Doesn't that stop them from having the ability to IM you? Or do I understand that correctly?
I support all the changes asked for here. We REALLY need more control over the IMs.

So if you mute people they can still clog up your IMs? That's a total rip, and should really be changed. Why in the world did they let that happen at all?
(I intend that as a rhetorical question, BTW. I know the real answer - a Linden with their head up.....nevermind)

Personally...having some way to differentiate IMs from a Friends List and IMs from others would be nice...
...say...an option to send all IMs not from Friends List straight to my Inbox. Man...would my life improve tremendously...
That...and somehow make notecard receipts not pop up on your screen...but rather go discreetly into inventory.

Something I would like that I don't think has been mentioned, sorry if I have I missed it.
I would like to be able to set "Busy" or "Mute all" and then add an exception list.
Example: I am with my Partner spending time alone. I would like to talk and IM her but not talk or receive IMs from anyone else. If I could include her in some kind of exception list that might work. Something like "Mute everyone" but add an exception to "everyone" would also work for me.
Also sorry if I might have missed something explaining an existing way of doing that which I am not aware of.

Allow IM disable toggle - PLEASE
06-11-2007 02:37
I have been searching for this topic for days, I can't believe that it took so long to find something close to my problem.
I have my Windows task bar hidden on the desktop, when I minimize SL and do other things every time someone sends an IM it shows my taskbar and flashes the Second Life tab. This is causing me a great deal of problems in RL. I have searched for a way to disable this in Windows but it seems that I can't do it (if anyone knows how I beg you to help me).
Please LL allow us to disable IM's, or any event that would un-hide the taskbar when minimized.
Thank you,
Jackie

There is a way. If you get one of the Tweak XP programs there's probably an option somewhere in one of them (I've seen it, I just don't remember which tweaker).

The control is server-side - you can't change it with a tweaker :-/. However, great idea. There is a way to control or mute all email IMs and notices - just make a GMail filter if you're using GMail '^_^. I use it to filter my sim management notices into a new label called SL Estates, and IMs from my friends into the SL Friends label. .: miles::.
